London,  NW1 0AP Map

Desertscene in association with Sound of Liberation are proud to welcome:

YAWNING MAN & BRIGHT CURSE

Born among the sand dunes of La Quinta, California in 1986, Yawning Man struck up the perfect sound for their surroundings; raw, flowing and psyched-out. Often playing generator parties deep in the desert, their open air jams made a huge impact on many who went on to lead the stoner rock scene. Brant Bjork, for one, has proudly stated Yawning Man are the greatest band he's ever seen.

As if it wasn't impressive enough that they inspired many of the founding fathers of the stoner rock scene, they managed to gain their reverence without a single release for almost twenty years. The band's first official releases - the Pot Head EP and Rock Formations - dropped in 2005, confirming to the wider scene what they'd already been told; Yawning Man jam hard.

If you want to find out just how hard they jam, book your tickets today.

Soweto Kinch 3, Riot Jazz Brass Band, Werkha Live, gnabgnab

Jun 2, 12:00pm - Jun 3, 3:00am

Hidden Door
The old Leith Theatre, Ferry Road
Edinburgh,  EH6 4AE Map

The final weekend at Hidden Door kicks off with another collaboration, with Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival presenting Werkha and Gnabgnab before headline slots from renowned rapper/saxophonist Soweto Kinch and 9-piece Riot Jazz with their twisted mix of funk, soul, hip hop and aggressive jazz. Then DJ Rebecca Vasmant take us into the wee small hours, bringing a fresh new twist to dance music with her love of jazz.

Plus cinema selected by Scottish Queer International Film Festival joining us from Glasgow with the goal to get people watching, talking about, and making more queer films.

There’s also another chance to catch Roanna Davidson performing EGO ET Al and Clare Marcie’s What Would Kanye Do?

TICKETS £16: bit.ly/hdejf

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

***SOWETO KINCH TRIO***
Soweto Kinch is multi award-winning saxophonist, MC and composer specialising in a trademark style of Jazz, Rap and Spoken Word unlike that of any other performer in the world. Revered among both musicians and rappers alike, Soweto has amassed an unprecedented array of accolades including two MOBO awards, two Urban Music Awards, BBC Rising Star Award, BBC Best Jazz Instrumentalist, BBC Best Jazz Band, Montreux Jazz Festival Award, Peter Whittingham Award for Jazz innovation, Winner of the White Foundation World Sax competition and a nomination for the much coveted Mercury Award. He now hosts his very own weekly BBC radio show ‘Jazz Planet’.

Growing up with a playwright for a father and an actress for a mother, performance has always been in Soweto’s blood and has over the years become an ambassador of urban culture as well as a British jazz institution with achievements ranging from the curation of several large international festivals to the production and scoring of various highly acclaimed music-based theatrical works to starring in a reality show series which followed him and other music figureheads like Goldie and Ms Dynamite as they each mentored and coached 12 vulnerable youths ahead of their live performance before HM Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace.

Soweto Kinch is currently touring his new album ‘Nonagram’ in trio/quartet format with saxophone/vocals, drums, bass and piano – Expect scalding hot hard bop jazz/hip-hop grooves spliced with free flowing fiery lyrics of the likes you’ve never heard before!

***RIOT JAZZ BRASS BAND***
The 9-barrelled Balkan-to-Brooklyn brass-boosted bounce that straddles genres and defies convention!

Riot Jazz Brass Band returns with their third album recorded LIVE at Band on the Wall in Manchester, January 2017.
Following on from the success of ‘Incoming!’ this album captures the raw sound and energy of the band in its full live glory across two epic nights at one of the UK’s most iconic venues (Band on the Wall)
www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuhJwPiqY3g

Since setting sail in late-noughties Manchester, Riot Jazz Brass Band has been a bare-breasted, fist-pumping galleon figure of happiness and energy. Stirring up a hot-pot of peace-lovin’ aggro-jazz and re-interpreted dancefloor bangers, these brass-wielding super-heroes of fine-tuning the good times have filled ear-holes, dance floors and festival fields across countries and continents!

***WERKHA - LIVE BAND***
Described by Urban Essence, as “ooz[ing] with creative flair, vibrancy and musical craftsmanship. It has soul, it has funk, it has feeling,” Colours showed the maturing musical depth of this still young producer; balancing an organically live kinetic energy with an attentive ear for sonic nuance, spatialisation, and harmony. Tom’s subtly impressive lustrous guitar playing also shines through on the album, touching on the Breezin’ jazz tones of a young George Benson. Clash magazine extolled the record as “a challenging, yet intensely satisfying listen”, with Werkha’s ideas and wide range of influences percolating at such a frequency that he ends up “creating new subgenres of his own.”

Supported consistently by Gilles Peterson, who included early single “Sidesteppin” on his Brownswood Bubblers Ten, Werkha’s music has also been heavily championed by THUMP, Eton Messy, Rob da Bank, BBC R1’s Monki, John Kennedy at Radio X, and a broad range of BBC 6Music tastemakers including Lauren Laverne, Nemone and Tom Ravenscroft.

Werkha’s virtuoso live band, fronted by regular collaborator Bryony Jarman-Pinto, alongside Matt Davies (kit), Alan Keary (bass), Dom Morris (FOH), have been busily honing their craft for a while now, playing clubs and festivals across Europe, alongside high profile support tours with Bonobo and Chet Faker. Werkha’s DJ chops are also impressive, most effortlessly at home in the context of the So Flute club-night he helps run in Manchester, alongside fellow residents Baloo, Bolts, Danuka and Yadava.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5e-F_hYGM4

***GNABGNAB***
A BRAND NEW PROJECT - a heavy low end minimalist drum & brass experiment for close-up interactive physical enjoyment.

Drawing influence from the nascent “brass house” scene emerging from New York (Too Many Zooz, Moon Hooch), while blending in a new set of influences, from afrobeat to second line, gnabgnab is a new project from two familiar faces on Edinburgh’s music scene (and Hidden Door): Tom PIckles (sax) - Jamie Graham (drums).

***REBECCA VASMANT***
In an age increasingly dominated by faceless machine-created sounds, DJ-Producer Rebecca Vasmant is bringing a fresh new twist to dance music with her love of jazz, the original form of unbridled spiritual sonic expression.

While promoting her own parties in Glasgow, starting her jazz record label Shiehallion and touring the world for Ministry Of Sound, her whirlwind schedule has recently fitted in sessions with eight-strong Ghanaian outfit Kakatsitsi, which will manifest as a live fusion show mixing traditional African rhythms with modern dance ingredients; two strains of dancefloor-friendly catharsis joining together in a vibrant new mutant.

Rebecca has already made a name in Glasgow with her Made In Glasgow and Know The Way parties, running a popular record fair with the venerable Sub Club and a monthly spot on BBC Radio Scotland playing contemporary jazz records in an attempt to bridge the gap between this much abused but crucial genre and the electronic scene. A huge jazz fan, she also airs this facet of her irrepressible musical passion at key events like the Glasgow Jazz Festival and the Baltic Soul Weekender.

Renowned UK clubs which have been treated to Rebecca’s sublime house and techno sets include a two year residency at Edinburgh’s Cabaret Voltaire, the Sub Club/Arches and 69 Below in Glasgow, Aberdeen’s Snafu, Dundee’s Reading Room, We Love... at Manchester’s Sankey’s, Leeds’ Back To Basics and London niteries including MOS, Pacha, Turnmills and East Village. She has also played festivals including Rockness, Audio Soup, Kelburn, Doune The Rabbit Hole and Wickerman, plus Ibiza spots such as Space, Savannah and Zoo Project.

Rebecca’s MOS activities have taken her to 22 countries in the last two years, including premiere spots in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Estonia, India, Africa, Nicaragua, Bosnia, Latvia, Dubai, Austria, Turkey, Serbia, Algeria and Bulgaria.

***ASTROJAZZ***
"Ultimately Astrojazz is all about supporting good music. When not working out of the office, I spread the Astrojazz gospel through the wheels of steel. Since blowing a student loan in 1997 to bag a pair of Technics 1210s, DJ Astrojazz has been spinning records of all kinds ever since. From jazz, afrobeat and tropicalismo, through funk, soul, hip-hop and dub to the myriad cutting-edges of modern electronica and dance, the sound of DJ Astrojazz is diverse yet tight, and designed to move dancefloors of all kinds to a unique blend of music from across continents and ages.

DJ Astrojazz has played hundreds of shows over the years, from sweaty basements clubs to large festival tents, notable gigs including Gugulethu Township in Cape Town, a boat in the Adriatic, jazz clubs in Finland, Arcadia, Pussy Parlure and Rum Shack at Glastonbury, and all over the UK at some point. He is resident DJ at a number of venues and clubnights. He has supported a huge range of artists, like Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Candi Staton, Guru & Jazzmatazz, Bonobo, Tony Allen, Roy Ayers, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas…the list goes on and on.

Monteverdi: The Other Vespers

Monteverdi: The Other Vespers

Jun 2, 7:30pm - Jun 2, 10:00pm

Salisbury Cathedral
The Close
Salisbury,  SP1 2EJ Map

Singers, cornetts and sackbuts, early baroque violins, theorbos and organ bring to life this ravishing music to mark the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth and I Fagiolini’s own 30th anniversary year.

“Like their concerts the disc is lively, imaginative, even anarchic… and a lot of fun.” - BBC Music Magazine

The repertoire also features delightful surprises, like Monteverdi’s music for cornetto and four voices, strongly reminiscent of the Hilliards’ collaboration with saxophonist Jan Garbarek.

Following a sell-out tour of last year’s Lance, Kieran Hodgson returns with Maestro, his second Edinburgh Comedy Award nominated smash-hit character comedy show.

In 2003 KIERAN HODGSON heard the music of Gustav Mahler and decided to write a symphony. 13 years later, Kieran returns with a violin and a story about falling in love and attempting something far beyond your abilities.

Following a sold-out fifth year in June 2016, the UK’s biggest all-day multi-venue festival, Camden Rocks Festival will be hosting over 250 bands and artists across 25 of Camden Town’s revered venues this June 3rd 2017, Camden Rocks are also proud to announce that legendary Camden venue KOKO will join the 2017 festival.

With a career including 25 Top 40 hits, over five million record sales, including three Platinum and two Gold albums, FEEDER returned from hiatus last year in tremendous style. Celebrating their highest chart position since 2008 with 9th record ‘All Bright Electric’, the album marks their 7th top 10 charting release, with critics hailing it as the band’s very best.
Speaking ahead of their performance, FEEDER frontman Grant Nicholas says:
“It's great to be playing Koko again as part of Camden Rocks Festival in my old haunt. I lived in Camden for over ten years and it's where Feeder got started and played regularly back in the early and mid-nineties. I remember writing many songs like ‘High’ and ‘Just a Day’ in my old flat on Camden Road, and some fun nights at Feet First, the Electric Ballroom and the Underworld. It's been almost 21 years since the release of Polythene, our first album, but Camden still holds a special place for us.”

Jun 3, 7:00pm - Jun 3, 9:30pm

The Bell Inn

Bath,  BA1 5BW Map

Ever imagined what it would be like if you crossed slam poetry with battle rap? This June, two teams full of acclaimed poets and incredible emerging artists will be going head to head! The event will also include an amazing feature set from Melanie Branton!

Last Word will be teaming up with Raise the Bar Spoken Word, with a twist on their new event “Poetry Versus” bringing a friendly, fun and competitive twist to conventional slam poetry. The year’s Edinburgh Fringe will see two poets pitted against one another in a series of rounds based on themes randomly selected, and you can catch an exclusive team slam version at the Bath Fringe with The Last Word on June 3rd. The winners are voted by the audience, but expect a series of ridiculous twists and turns. Hosted by Polly Denny & Craft-D.

The last word is ripping up the rule book and using it as paper mache to build ourselves a new kind of poetry slam. We’re rounding up two teams of incredible poets from the Bath poetry scene, and they will have to fight their corner, poetry style! Only one team can win, but who decides? Who has the final say? Who has the last word? You do, our wonderful audience! Or do you?

Wake Up & Deirdrealize - Bath Fringe

Wake Up & Deirdrealize - Bath Fringe

Jun 5, 6:00pm - Jun 7, 9:00pm

Burdall's Yard
7A Anglo Terrace
Bath,  BA1 5NH Map

A ridiculous, outlandish, improvised, character romp, guaranteed to take you on the most thrilling rollercoaster ride of your life

Deirdre Me is on a mission to show the world how awesome it is, one person at a time, starting with you. Hailing all the way from Texas-Tennessee, Deirdre is more magnanimous than Gandhi, sexier than chocolate, hotter than the sun. With an artillery of brash offensive charm, outlandish opinions and ridiculous ideas she is locked, loaded and ready to open fire in pursuit of your awesomeness. If you think you don’t want that, trust Deirdre when she tells you ‘you sure as hell need it’. The louder you scream, the faster we go!

This is the story of one woman’s desperate quest to win at life. In a world where dreams are sold as reality, the notion of ‘fake it to make it’ is pushed to the extreme until even Deirdre can’t keep up the pretense anymore.

A hilarious examination of the meaning of success, a ludicrous expose of the isolation and loneliness that threaten to engulf us all in our endless quest to achieve it. The show is an audacious combination of story-telling and game show, with a dark twist. Everyone is about to ‘Wake Up & Deirdrealize’, not least of all Deirdre herself.

Nincompoops’ first ever full length theatre show is bought to you by the company’s creator, first class Gaulier trained idiot Lucy Harrington.

About:

“Mark Gemini Thwaite is a man who should need no introduction, given the breadth of artists and musical styles he’s made his indelible mark in. Lending his skills as a composer and guitarist to the likes of goth/rockers like The Mission and Peter Murphy, classic rock & rollers like Thin Lizzy’s Ricky Warwick and The Who’s Roger Daltrey, and well known in industrial circles for his collaborations in Primitive Race, Revolting Cocks, and Gary Numan” REGEN magazine
MGT has been the guitarist for many influential UK goth bands and artists over the last two decades, including The Mission, Peter Murphy, Tricky, Gary Numan, Spear of Destiny, Theatre of Hate, Mob Research (with Paul Raven of Killing Joke), and Canadian goth rockers National Velvet plus various live and recorded appearances with Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Revolting Cocks, Roger Daltrey, P.J. Harvey, Alanis Morissette, Combichrist, Primitive Race, Franz Treichler of The Young Gods and Ville Valo of Finnish band HIM.
In 2016 MGT signed a solo album deal with German label SPV records and releases his first solo album, "Volumes" under his MGT acronym at the end of June worldwide. The lead single, "Knowing Me Knowing You", a cover version of the ABBA classic featuring guest vocalist Ville Valo of HIM, was released in April and viewed over half a million times in two months - mixed by Tim Palmer (HIM/David Bowie). Valo is not the only guest musician on "Volumes", other appearances include Wayne Hussey of Mark's previous band The Mission, Miles Hunt and Erica Nockalls of UK band The Wonder Stuff, Ricky Warwick of Black Star Riders / Thin Lizzy, Raymond Watts (PIG, KMFDM), Saffron (Republica), Julianne Regan (All About Eve), Ashton Nyte (The Awakening) and Andi of Sex Gang Children.
MGT’s cover of ABBA classic ‘Knowing Me Knowing You’ with Ville Valo of HIM was released as a single on SPV records back in 2016, with an accompanying video shot & directed by noted videographer Ville Juurikkala.. now the video has now surpassed nearly 1.5 MILLION views!
“Mark is a friend, and the stars were aligned… it was the right song at the right time” – Ville Valo
MGT: “I’d had an inspiration to record a dark and brooding version of ‘Knowing Me Knowing You’ a few years ago.. the solo album was in the works during last summer, so I recorded the music for it, lovingly reconstructing the parts and melodies based on the ABBA version, and then sent the completed music demo to Ville, who came back with his fantastic vocals, perfect for the song..”
“A real highlight is the dramatic singer/songwriter ballad Drive and Forget, sung by Warwick. The rest of the 13 songs are real songs (and no guitar orgies) and really deliver on diversity and bandwidth… again, with so much original talent and so many famous friends, you can’t do a lot wrong” CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE
“‘Volumes’ has a very cohesive feel about it, something that in this age of single track downloads many full bands seem to struggle with and that togetherness has in part got to be down to the crystal clear and razor sharp production and mix” UBERROCK.co.uk

Salisbury Playhouse - Official
Salisbury Playhouse, Malthouse Lane
Salisbury,  SP2 7RA Map

Ballet Black, now celebrating its 16th year, has been delighting a new generation of dance fans with its “dash, daring and joie de vivre” (The Guardian). The company of British and international dancers of black and Asian descent returns to the 2017 Festival with an all-new triple bill, blending classical and contemporary, narrative and abstract.

To begin, Captured ebbs and flows to the fiery emotion of Martin Lawrance’s edgy choreography, set to a Shostakovich string quartet, whilst the music of Debussy is the focus of celebrated British choreographer Michael Corder’s new work. To close, South Bank Sky Arts Award-winner Annabelle Lopez Ochoa turns a popular fairy tale on its head, as she gives her story-ballet a surprising twist: this time, the wolf will truly regret ever meeting Red Riding Hood.

Gate to Southwell Festival 2017

Gate to Southwell Festival 2017

Jun 8, 4:00pm - Jun 11, 11:59pm

We have some great plans including something very special on Saturday afternoon. You loved the Dylan tribute concert in 2016, and so we have another concert "Summer of Love at 50" for 2017 marking 50 years since the original summer of love in 1967.

Artists confirmed so far for the festival:
Kate Rusby Jon Boden Daphne's Flight Blazin' Fiddles Le Vent du nord BOC oficial The Changing Room Chris Smither Megson The East Pointers Megan Henwood Attila the Stockbroker The Ooks of Hazzard Jim Moray Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin Ranagri Chris Sherburn & Denny Bartley Jess Morgan Grace Petrie Les Barker Keith Donnelly Alden, Patterson and Dashwood Sheelanagig Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage Banter, Monkey Box, Vertical Expression, cloudstreet Reg Meuross Music Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies James Edwyn and the Borrowed Band Jack Harris - Singer/Songwriter The Vagaband Idiot and Friend, Winter Wilson She Shanties Dana Immanuel & the Stolen Band Wookalily Edd Donovan and The Wandering Moles Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra The BeauBowBelles Gnoss Tannara Katie Spencer Wayward Jane THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE BROTHERS HOGG Wholesome Fish Leen Valley Band Jason Maverick - Comic Poet Ursula Holden-Gill

In the meantime here are some excerpts of reviews of 2016:

FRUK

"Our return visit to Southwell turned out every bit as entertaining as last year, the layout has been tweaked to make the site a little more compact whilst the festival has grown a little bigger with 3 stage marquees plus the bar stage and an outside dance stage, most in operation for 3 full days plus Thursday evening. Headline acts ranged from the Celtic/World fusion of Kila, the song writing and multi-instrumental prowess of Show of Hands, the eclectic, fascinating song choices of Eddi Reader to the out and out good-time rockgrass of Hayseed Dixie. The range of supporting artists was even wider and thoroughly justifies Southwell calling itself a roots and acoustic music festival rather than a folk festival."

SPIRAL EARTH

"However good the site and facilities are, it is good programming that makes or breaks a festival, something that the Southwell organisers have got just right. You need your headliners to get the tents bursting at the seams, breaking acts for a buzz, uptempo good time bands to jump about to, earnest singer songwriters to lose yourself in the lyrics, trad folk for the trad fans and something genre defying to keep the festival vibe bouncing along.

In many ways Southwell feels like a smaller version of the Cambridge Folk Festival, and I mean that as a compliment, the range of artists, the way the programming worked, and even the layout of the site all feel thoroughly sorted. It is getting harder and harder for festivals to stand out these days, there is a finite pool of folk and acoustic acts to pick from, most of whom will do multiple festival dates in a year. Putting a programme together that offers something unique is either very hard or very expensive, so respect to the organisers...

The other thing that a festival lives or dies by is the beer tent; good choice of ales and ciders, tick. Tasting notes and knowledgable staff, tick. A big enough bar to get served without waiting too long, tick. Sensible prices, tick. Top marks again Southwell.

Overall the Gate to Southwell Festival is a little gem, great programming, plenty of ways to get involved with workshops, lots to do for kids. All of it set within a good new site that seems set to be the festival's home for a few years to come."

He's described by San Francisco Weekly (free press, edited by lesbians and designed by trannys with large hands and hidden agendas) as "stand-up in the very best possible sense - deadpan, ever-alert and hilarious"

Scott also appeared in Mrs Doubtfire, where, effortlessly, he played a homosexual; and Star Wars: Phantom Menace, where, breathlessly, he wore a body stocking.

"If you thought comics like Ricky Gervais pushed boundaries then nothing will prepare you for Scott Capurro…He is, in my opinion, the bravest and funniest comedian on the circuit" - GQ Magazine

The Something Else Sistafest 2017!

The Something Else Sistafest 2017!

Jun 9, 4:00pm - Jun 11, 11:00pm

Spring Farm, Dun's Tew

So what's this Something Else Sistafest all abou?
It's just another SE - same solar powered shenanigans, same crew, same live music, no DJs, no healing, family friendly, dog friendly, no bullshit, grassroots formula, but all of the acts playing across the 3 stages over the 3 days will be female or female led.
Why? Because despite the grassroots being about equality, music wise it's seriously imbalanced.
I've spoken to promoters who tell me the talent just isn't out there, or the ladies aren't putting themselves out there, along with a variety of other excuses as to why their line-ups are male dominated.
Well, me darlins, I know a HUGE array of talented ladies on the grassroots, I've also spoken with lots of them about how they've faced blatant sexism when applying for gigs. The sheer lack of balance in most line-ups also affects the confidence of hugely talented young women. It has to change.
It's replacing SESE and we've moved the dates forward.
It's been planned so far in advance, along with the line-up, because I live in hope that, not only will other promoters and organisers take note of these bloody amazing acts and all the others out there, but will also put more thought into the balance of their own future line-ups.
Is this a festival just for ladies then? Don't be daft. ALL genders and those that don't identify are as welcome as ever.
Hope this answers all the questions that have been fired at me. Early bird tickets are up for £40. Your support to get this message out is not only appreciated, but vital.

SCREAMING TARTS PRESENTS… From The Jam feat. Bruce Foxton.
Friday June 9th 2017. The Civic Hall, Cottingham.

The Jam had amazing chart success with 18 singles and 7 albums to make the top 40 in the United Kingdom from their debut in 1977 to their break up in 1982. Their last 5 albums were all top ten hits and their last 8 singles made it into the top 10. Just Who Is the 5 O’Clock Hero? made the charts at no 8 as an import and remains the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK.

From the Jam features Bruce Foxton from the original Jam line up. He also spent 15 years playing bass with Stiff Little Fingers. Bruce is joined by Russell Hastings on lead vocal and guitar.

From The Jam have gained a reputation for the kind of incendiary ‘live’ performances that sealed the reputation of The Jam all those years ago. Audiences can expect to hear classic The Jam hits such as Down In The Tube Station At Midnight, Going Underground, Town Called Malice and The Modern World as well as some live favourites and songs from Bruce’s solo career.

The 80s Music Festival

The 80s Music Festival

Jun 10, 11:00am - Jun 11, 11:00pm

Peterborough Arena

A new outdoor festival celebrating the 80s is heading for Peterborough Arena this June!

Cambridgeshire’s biggest, newest outdoor 80s music festival features a chart-topping line-up including Limahl, The Real Thing and Five Star.

Thousands of people are expected to attend ‘The 80s Music Festival’ over the entire weekend of June 10 and June 11 this year.

We love to see new events head to Peterborough and the Arena at the East of England Showground is certainly bringing us some fresh entertainment.

Sharon Walsh, the Events Manager of the festival, says:

“The 80s Music Festival is exceptional on all levels: it has a fantastic line-up of artists at the amazing Peterborough Arena venue, with lots of entertainment on offer for children and adults, at brilliant tickets prices – with the option for camping and even the choice to bring in your own food and drink!”

If you’re a fan of this decade this festival promises to be an amazing musical event. The line up is packed with everyone’s 80s favourites including The Real Thing and Five Star known for their flamboyant image, matching costumes and beautifully choreographed dance routines.

They’re all joined by other classic iconic 80s artists including: Jocelyn Brown, Modern Romance, Owen Paul, Aswad, Odyssey and Tight Fit as well as supporting tribute acts: Wild Boys, Bootleg Bowie, Bad Boys tribute to WHAM!, Michael Jackson tribute MJ Magic, Bon Giovi, and Atomic Blondie.

There’ll be lots of other exciting stuff to entertain alongside the music, too, as the festival promises delicious food and drink, DJs, street entertainment, thriller funfair rides, 80s games arcade machines and camping.

A full adult weekend ticket costs £60.00 including entry to the festival, and an adult day ticket is priced at £30.00.

Children are also welcome and a day ticket for them costs £7.50 each.

There is free car parking on site and camping is on offer for three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at £7.50 per day.

The event runs from 11 am to midnight on the Saturday and 11am to 11pm on the Sunday, with no two line-ups the same on either day.

Kevin Gurney, massive 80s music enthusiast, Radio Presenter, and compere at this year’s festival says:

“£30 to see any one of these bands would be the bargain of the year so to get a full day of them – and me ? – is like going back to 80’s prices.”

So, if you fancy a trip back in time reliving the fashion, fun and fabulousness of the 80s, then this festival is for you. Get out your shoulder pads and visit the East of England’s Peterborough Arena on Saturday 10 and/or Sunday 11 June!

About:

Katalina Kicks - www.facebook.com/katalinakicks
Developers and moneymen can change a city’s shape, but not its soul. There are ancient spirits that skyscrapers, shopping malls and “affordable” housing can never silence. Spirits that will always find their way through the ever-shifting concrete and clay; that once whistled up Goldhawk Road to the three chord stomp of The Who’s I Can’t Explain; that trembled between the traffic of the Westway to The Clash’s White Riot. The endemic sound of London, especially West London, will always find the crack in the masonry to slip out and shake free. In Katalina Kicks, it shakes yet again.
Katalina Kicks are a London band as only a London band can be, three nomads from different points of the compass – a Southern soul-searcher, a Northern agitator and a South American vixen – whose desire to make music lured them first to the metropolis, and eventually each other. And, by birth, a quintessentially West London band, first fashioned in the clatter and fume of Shepherds Bush. Even if they’ve changed postcodes since, their sound – urgent, questioning, loud and fierce – has never lost the urban beat of W12.

Climb the Attic - www.facebook.com/climbtheattic
Dynamic rocknroll with a high melody quotient shades of Foo Fighters and Biffy Clyro but also trace elements of Classic rock a-la Thin Lizzy and blusier more recent coves White Denim, fine work

Louder Still - www.facebook.com/louderstillband
“Fast rising UK rock band who have brought a new shine to an old form – old school rock”
(Louder than war)
Louder Still are a young Rock band formed in 2016 but forged from love of the great British rock giants. Their songs have amazing melodies, searing vocals, heart-stopping riffs and all based on the granite foundations of an incredible pulsating rhythm section. Louder Still have somehow pulled off a neat trick in making the music sound 21st century and vital.
“Fist pumping hard rock and enough power riffs to clog your arteries!!”
(Decibelgeek Rocklahoma Spotlight)
In this band there is something for everyone no matter your music taste. All four members are outstanding musicians and have a huge wealth of live and studio experience across the globe. The passion and hard work that drives this band is something that will surprise you and these guys are dedicated to bringing rock music back in to the forefront of the public eye.
Bringing youth and new ideas to a classic style and swimming against the tide is always a perfect and potent combination and with their deep love of the classic and young energy it’s easy to see why the band are building up a big reputation. This could be why they are building up a big following on the live circuit – a place where reputations are earned and not created by hype.
It was Dee Snider of Twisted Sister that coined the phrase ‘I Wanna Rock’.
Louder Still epitomise this phrase!!

INDYA - www.facebook.com/IndyaOfficial
INDYA (Or otherwise known as The Indya Band) was formed in early 2015 by the talented Musician Natalie Indya West who fronts the Alternate Rock Band, and writes the Bands material. Behind her are Bassist Ewan Macintosh, Drummer Andrea Rapisara, Guitarist Goncalo Charneca & Backing Vocalist Marit Kesa. Inspired by that of Whitesnake, Bowie, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin & Joan Jett The Band have gone from Glam Rock to Alternate with a complete through the ages mash up. Experimentation is the key with Indya and nothing is black & white. You will be puzzled with the varied contrast of genre.

[KAPSIZE RECORDINGS]
soundcloud.com/jokerkapsize

Joker creates some of the most unique dubstep and grime, and initially became famous for for creating the mythical subgenre "Purple sound". He went on to be named "2009 king of bass music" by XLR8R Magazine at only the age 20. He has released on labels as diverse as Hypderub, Tectonic, H.E.N.C.H and Plasticians Terrorythem, whilst also pumping out releases on his own imprint Kapsize. He has also released two albums. This guy has a musical back catalogue that could battle most at the age of just 28. He is a genius behind the decks as much as he is in production. Nottingham get ready for Joker!

Dillinja
[Valve Recordings]
soundcloud.com/dillinja

There are few producers in the drum’n’bass scene who are as respected and revered as Dillinja. With his trademark combination of dirty stomach-churning basslines and tighter than tight beats, his reputation has been secured as one of the most influential producers in drum’n’bass history. As well as running his own label 'Valve Recordings', Dillinja has released on some of the biggest drum’n’bass labels in the world, including Bryan Gee’s V Recordings, Philly Blunt, Renegade Hardware and also Goldie’s pioneering Metalheadz imprint. Dillinja used these labels to show his unique musical versatility and establish himself as one of the most sort after producer in the process. Not content with releasing as many as 500 tunes, Dillinja also owns the mighty 96kw 'Valve Sound System' which is recognised all over the world as being ‘The Worlds Number One Drum and Bass Sound System.’ We are ecstatic to welcome one of the most legendary figures in the the UK Underground to shred our VOID Airmotion soundsystem to pieces, All aboard Nottingham!

Slo Burn, Blood Ceremony, Steak

Jun 14, 7:00pm - Jun 14, 11:00pm

The Garage
20-22 Highbury Corner
London,  N5 1RD Map

Desertscene are ecstatic to announce Slo Burn are returning to London to follow up on their heroic performance at this year's Desertfest.

Closing out the first night of Desertfest to a capacity crowd, the resurrected stoner rock icons delivered on 20 years of hype. The 4 man fuzz machine - made up of original members John Garcia (vocals), Chris Hale (guitar), Damon Garrison, (bass) and Brady Houghton (drums) - owned the stage, not skipping a beat despite their long hiatus.

1996's Amusing the Amazing has long been revered in the underground circles as a flawless relic of early stoner rock. The four track EP, released in a newly post-Kyuss world, served as a rallying call that this scene wasn't going anywhere. Over two decades later they stand tall again over a scene they helped shape in only a year.

They'll be joined by Toronto's occult doomsters Blood Ceremony, whose flute-tinged witch rock has been pleasing ears since 2008's self-titled debut. Anchored by heavy progressive psychedelia, Blood Ceremony are the best of the 70s and phenomenal live. Also on the bill are London's own slice of fuzzy stoner, Steak. Hot on the heels of their latest release, No Gods to Save, Steak will provide the wall of fuzz to get the night started right.

You don't want to miss three of the finest live bands in the underground when they take over The Garage on June 14th. Book your tickets today.

The Tin Pan Band are back! This is another chance to see the popular American Blues/Swing Quartet who played here almost exactly a year ago on Friday 16th June - . Tickets £8
Mixing rough and tumble jazz with the gritty side of blues, Tin Pan offers listeners American roots music that captivates the soul. The band originated out of an innate need for music that meets people exactly where they are, providing an immediate, pure and energetic release from the everyday routine. Jesse Selengut, composer, lead vocalist and trumpet player first felt drawn to create Tin Pan after witnessing how his uninhibited style of performance differed from typical jazz presentations—his had the power to astonish and enrapture audiences with the kind of gusto previously reserved for rock n’ roll shows. Once that seed was planted, there was no question that the project would thrive.

* please note this event is separatley ticketed and not included in the Supersonic weekend ticket

To celebrate the Summer Solstice and Supersonic Festival, Yoga In Black are holding two sessions of their unique take on yoga over the Festival weekend, in collaboration with electric cellist Rotten Bliss.

Yoga In Black offer sessions of Dru Yoga, with a twist – leading you through the graceful and strength-enhancing exercises of the yogic tradition, to a soundtrack of metal, gothic rock, drone, doomjazz and dark ambient music.

A pre-recorded soundtrack of various dark artists will be augmented with music specially composed for the day, and will conclude with a live improvised accompaniment from Rotten Bliss, who builds up sonic storms of exploratory textures, defying expectations of the cello through her preference for extended techniques and extreme FX processing. Her abrasive playing style evokes the possession and freedom of rock’n’roll, deconstruction and decay.

Dru Yoga features the use of visualisation and affirmation in its practice, and these workshops engage imagery from pagan, Voudon and Thelemic traditions to invoke a sense of inner strength and peace.

Expect big sound, and sound teachings: a workout for your mind, body and ears. It will be intense, magickal and fun!

Supersonic Festival runs from the 16-18 June, Named by Stuart Maconie, BBC 6 Music as ‘the UK’s premier experimental music festival” and named number two in The Times guide to the fifty best events of the summer (2015). At the heart of the festival is a passion for genre bending sound and performance, with an international travelling audience and a commitment to emerging dynamic talent. Supersonic Festival’s diverse programme combines today’s most exciting talent with legendary, one-of-a-kind acts.

The line up includes Arbouretum /Colin Stetson/ Jenny Hval /Laura Zonal with Justin Broadrick + The Bug / Melt Banana / Oxbow /Princess Nokia / Pigs x 7 / Flowers Must Die / Raime / Zu

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
About:

B A I T - www.facebook.com/hatebait
For those that have ever ruminated on the possibilities of using wasps as weapons, biological immortality, or Janet Street Porter’s teeth – you are not alone. And here is your soundtrack.
BAIT is the sound of industrial machines playing ping-pong in the back of a stolen XR3i tearing down the Autobahn. BAIT is the sound of surfing into a concrete wall, to the soundtrack of the monotonous bip of the U Boat radar.
BAIT is no mere band. BAIT is no simple record. BAIT is an art project.
BAIT’s album will be released on Southend’s emerging Cool Thing Records, responsible for spawning BBC 6 Music and Radio X favourites Asylums, The Horse Heads, and Becky Margaret.
Like an unholy science experiment that has spliced the genes of Killing Joke and Sleaford Mods, BAIT’s self-titled album is a 21st century post-punk classic in waiting. Excavating deep into a psyche and blasting it out through a wall of speakers, BAIT is a complex tapestry of humour, anger, determination, fear, selfies, identical twins, and disobedient elephants.
The identity of BAIT is not important.

Louis Antoniou - www.facebook.com/Louisantonioumusic
Queens of The Stone Age vs Arctic Monkeys. Socially conscious lyrics and hard hitting riffs. Doomed romances, run ins on nights out and seeing trolleys in lakes.

HVMM - www.facebook.com/wearehvmm
It was three winters ago that Andy and Sam met in a low-lit country pub, following a fight and a sizeable bill for glassware. Ebony’s initiation was more civilized. Andy spotted her stalking him during one of his ritual trawls of some local record shops. ‘You need me in your band’, was followed by coffee, countless roll-ups and ‘I do’. On low-end duty, one Jack was replaced by a bigger, bolder other, at around the same time Ebony was sworn in. The sum is the HVMM you see today.
To picture this foursome, you have to imagine looking at them through the opaque window of a Victorian mansion: dark, anachronistic, almost intangible figures with an eye for sartorial poise.
On the ear, they’re an alchemy of apoplectic rock – fizzing with brawny, off-time riffs – and rasping, super-charged vocals. The lyrics mix melancholy, black humour and romance.
Their stage is one of febrile chaos, sex and slick-back swagger. Thunderbolt choruses seize attention, swell crowds and make people pout.

PYRA - www.facebook.com/lovepyra
Feline like a paper cut, Pyra’s music deals in raw emotion set to a soundtrack of 60’s inspired violent guitars and drums.
Marilyn Manson meets Marilyn Monroe. Pyra loves The Kills, Nancy Sinatra, Lana Del Rey, The Rolling Stones and David Lynch – ‘If you want put me in a box you’ll have to cut me up into little pieces and put me into lots of boxes’.
“Bloody hell what a voice – it reaches down your pants while holding your heart before ripping it out through your throat”. Stephen Harris, Producer (Dave Matthews, Kodaline, U2, The Keiser Chiefs)
www.lovepyra.com/- www.facebook.com/lovepyra

Tom Bell and The Alien Brothers - www.facebook.com/tbandtab
"A cultivation of creamy vibes set to melt any mind from the hustle and bustle of life’s sour lemons. A four-part troupe demonstrating remarkable skills of funk and soul and rock ‘n’ roll!" - PurpleMilk.org

Bateman - www.facebook.com/batemansuck
We are Bateman.
We have existed since 2010.
We have a new album titled ‘SMUT’, released 1 April 2014.
THIS ALBUM IS FREE TO DOWNLOAD FROM OUR BANDCAMP.
To promote this album, we setup an independent Australian tour with Japanese hardcore band ‘NoLA’.
We have played shows both in our home town of Melbourne, and across Australia.
We have shared the stage with some of Australia’s and the world’s finest including Rolo Tomassi (UK), NoLA (Japan), Totally Unicorn, Safe Hands, Jack the Stripper, and A Secret Death.
Our previous release was the EP ‘Ultra Violence’. Released in 2012 on Slippery Slope Recordings, it was mixed by Joby J Ford guitarist of ‘The Bronx’ and was critically well received.
HOPE TO MEET YOU SOON.

Transcending genres and trends, Hot 8 have performed and collaborated with a wide range of artists, from Lauryn Hill to Mos Def to the Blind Boys of Alabama, and were nominated for a Grammy in 2013 for their second album ‘The Life and Times Of…’.

2015’s acclaimed ‘Vicennial – 20 Years of the Hot 8 Brass Band’ LP, exemplifies their ability to honour their city’s musical traditions while forging their own powerful legacy. A celebratory 2016 gold vinyl release of remixes for their renowned version of “Sexual Healing” (for which a new video was also recently launched, gaining 700K hits) has continued to expand on their forward momentum and diverse appeal around their 20th Anniversary milestone.

Chester Live Presents: Elevant & Guests (L2)

Jun 22, 7:00pm - Jun 22, 11:00pm

The Live Rooms
Chester,  CH1 3DR Map

Chester Live are excited to bring Liverpool based Elevant to The Live Rooms, Chester as part of our 2017 festival. They'll be bringing their own style of in-your-face alternative rock to ignite the first night of Chester Live 2017.

'For a new band to deliver one record of the year is pretty commendable and rare, but three albums in three years of which two are included in our best of year list is pretty remarkable.' - Shakenstir

'I am converted. The dynamic between guitarist/vocalist Michael Edward and bassist Hannah Lodge is electric, and when Edward thrusts his guitar into the hands of the crowd, falls to his knees and just screams while they flail away, you can't help but love it.' - Bido Lito

'With their prog-like precision and constant genre hopping (which isn’t a case of awkwardly trying their hand at different genres until one clumsily fits; Every stylistic u-turn is fiendishly innovative and inescapably engaging) it’s no wonder the experimental DIY approach they apply to every aspect of their work, works so god damn well.' - Gigslutz

'Elevant have made a revealing album that is raw and honest and open about the darkest parts of society and humanity.' - Artrocker

'The three-piece more than possess the chops to convince, with the trio sounding far vaster than the sum of their parts. Anchored by Tom Shand’s pummelling Bonham-esque beats and Hannah Lodge’s interlocking bassline weaves, lead singer Michael Edward’s lung bursting Chris Cornell-style lead vocals and bludgeoning guitar work make the record sound like the work of a six-piece.' - Bearded Magazine

Support comes from Sustinere, Skellums and Turbulence.

Chester Live Presents: The Anchoress & Guests

Chester Live Presents: The Anchoress & Guests

Jun 23, 7:00pm - Jun 23, 11:00pm

The Live Rooms
Chester,  CH1 3DR Map

Chester Live are absolutely delighted to announce that the incredible The Anchoress will headline The Live Rooms, Chester on Friday 23rd June 2017 as part of their 2017 festival.

The Anchoress is the moniker of Welsh multi-instrumentalist Catherine Anne Davies.

Her debut album, ‘Confessions of A Romance Novelist’ , was released in 2016 to widespread critical acclaim. The album was named amongst the Guardian critics’ Albums of the Year, won HMV’s Welsh Album of the Year, Best Newcomer at the PROG awards, and a nomination for Welsh
Music Prize.

Mojo described Davies as being in possession of ‘a devastatingly powerful voice’. The Observer called it ‘a blackly witty break up album…compelling’, while PROG magazine described the record as ‘Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love updated for the 21st century’.

The genre-hopping, expansive production of Confessions of a Romance Novelist draws on influences as far and wide as Prince, Tori Amos, Roxy Music, The Carpenters, and David Bowie. On the album, Catherine plays a variety of instruments, including piano, guitar, flute, omnichord, mellotron, wurlitzer, glockenspiel, and celeste, as well as sampling church bells, and an orchestra of typewriters.

Alongside creating music as “The Anchoress”, Catherine joined the Simple Minds touring line-up in 2015 (when she first appeared behind the keyboard in the video for ‘Honest Town’). The Anchoress has also recently supported and duetted with fellow Welshmen, the Manic Street Preachers. She will be opening for the UK leg of the Simple Minds Acoustic Tour in May/June 2017, with a stripped-down version of her album.

Leigh Folk Festival - Estuary Songwriting Project Concert

Leigh Folk Festival - Estuary Songwriting Project Concert

Jun 23, 7:30pm - Jun 23, 10:00pm

Leigh Wesley Methodist Church
Wesley Methodist Church, Elm Road
Leigh-on-Sea,  SS9 1SJ Map

Tickets £10.00 + £2.00 booking fee avaliable at: music.leighfolkfestival.com

Last year Leigh Folk Festival commissioned 8 emerging and established musicians, songwriters and composers to produce a set of original songs on the subject of the Thames Estuary as a celebration of the event’s 25th anniversary. A stunning set of songs and tunes emerged from a week’s residency at Chalkwell Hall in September 2016 as part of Metal’s ‘Culture Lab’ programme, and has already been performed on previous occasions to great acclaim – at the Estuary Festival on Southend Pier in October, and more recently at Cecil Sharp House in London, home of the English Folk Dance & Song Society. The material is musically diverse but forms a cohesive and compelling suite of compositions, all themed around the Estuary’s landscape, natural history, legends and folklore.

The artists involved, three of whom were recent winners of BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards at the Royal Albert Hall, are:

HAZEL ASKEW, M.G. BOULTER, LUCY FARRELL, PIERS HASLAM, ROSHI NASEHI, NICK PYNN, ALASDAIR ROBERTS and KATE WATERFIELD

Each performer hails from a different musical background and brings their own individual style of songwriting and instrumental playing to the piece. The differences make for a unique and exciting collaboration between these highly talented artists.

This will be the final concert performance from the team, so festival fans should ensure they don’t miss out.

The Leigh Folk Festival’s Artistic Director, Paul Collier, says ‘we wanted to mark our landmark 25th anniversary year by commissioning a group of folk artists to reflect musically upon the festival’s rich heritage and its unique location in Leigh-on-Sea, at the mouth of the Thames. The compositions which emerged were highly impressive, and reflect the friendly, collaborative spirit of the week’s residency. It’s a fitting legacy for a festival which started small and has grown to where it is today – an annual event attracting up to 20,000 people over the course of a weekend’.

The project has been supported using public funding by the National Lottery, through Arts Council England.

The 2017 Leigh Folk Festival runs from June 22-25, more information at www.leighfolkfestival.com .

Chester Live Presents: Gideon Conn & Guests

Chester Live Presents: Gideon Conn & Guests

Jun 23, 8:00pm - Jun 23, 11:30pm

After finishing a degree in sculpture at MMU, Gideon Conn decided to become a builder, but nipped that in the bud after 8 months because it was very hard work. That was the point when he decided to be a full time artist and musician. He became a feature on the Manchester indie folk scene and was known for doing drawings at gigs and giving them to bands as a souvenirs.

Known for effortlessly blending acoustic folk and hip hop, Gideon has a unique performance style which make audiences very happy.

Dec ’07 was the release date of Gideon’s first single ‘I want you around’ a 10″ vinyl released on Get Cape Wear Cape Fly’s label Mannequin Records. It was Xfm playlisted, and breakfast single of the week on Shaun Keaveney’s 6 music show. This was followed by a BBC Maida Vale session with Huw Stephens.

UK Support tours with Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip and Jason Mraz followed in ’08 along with appearances at Glastonbury, Bestival, Latitude and several other festivals. ‘Trademark’ featured on Rob Da Bank’s Bestival A-Z compilation.

Acoustic single ‘Londonderry’ released on newly formed independent label ‘New Bop Sounds’ which became the title of Gideon’s debut full album released Sept ’10.

The second album ‘Take It all’ (released June 2012 on Tantrum Records), shows Gideon at the height of his song crafting powers. The record opens with lead single Fall Under Tokyo, a pumping radio tune with pure pop beats, soaring synths and Gideon’s mellow-sweet vocal. The Record features a vocal track from Josephine on Colours, a beautiful classic sounding soul ballad.

2013 has brought a UK tour with alternative Brighton based act, Bunty (Resonators). and plans are afoot for a joint October tour and 12″ vinyl release called ‘Highlights and Perceptions’ with independent Scottish singer Donna Macioca.

2015 saw the release of his 3rd studio album ‘Hiphop Original’ , released by London soul/jazz label Wah Wah 45s

Chester Live Presents: Martyn Ellis + Arms & Hearts

Chester Live Presents: Martyn Ellis + Arms & Hearts

Jun 23, 9:00pm - Jun 23, 11:00pm

Chester Live are delighted to announce our Friday line up for Commonhall Social, Chester.

Martyn Ellis, singer song writer from Rhuddlan, North Wales is an acoustic act that is sure to be remembered. He channels his experiences of war into poignant lyrics and gripping melodies with an acoustic punk sound.

After two tours of Afghanistan, suffering from PTSD and a breakdown, Ellis turned to songwriting as a way of expressing his pent-up feelings of loss and anxiety.

On his debut album "I've Got Something To Say" Ellis shows emotional intelligence and a raw, delicate openness that simply draws in the listener.

Ellis has toured the UK and played in many other countries around the world including Australia where he became one of the most popular acoustic artists on the Brisbane music scene.

With catchy guitar and powerful husky vocals Ellis can fit into the darkest corner of a bar or stand tall on the best of stages. His brief visit to the UK will quickly be over shadowed by his upcoming tour of Canada and USA so be sure to catch him on home soil.

Support comes from the superb Arms & Hearts.

Chester Live Presents: Campfire Social + Peaness

Chester Live Presents: Campfire Social + Peaness

Jun 23, 9:00pm - Jun 23, 11:30pm

Telfords Warehouse
Chester,   Map

Chester Live are delighted to be working with Telford's Warehouse on our 2017 festival, and we're excited to announce our Friday lineup of CAMPFIRE SOCIAL and Peaness.

Llangollen / Chester-based 5 piece, Campfire Social, are a refuge from the wild woods all around. Their incandescent, melodic songs take the intimate heartbreak of Elliott Smith and embellish with golden harmonies borrowed from The Beach Boys.

They’re the soundtrack to a touching and woozily nostalgic indie film, something by Jason Reitman or Lenny Abrahamson, as filmed in golden tones on the England / northeast Wales borders. Campfire Social grew out of the ashes of the very highly regarded, and lamented, Shy & the Fight (Radio 1, 6Music airplay; multiple festival appearances; debut single on Popty Ping Records).

Tom was that band’s chief songwriter. Campfire Social is an uplifting and incredibly beguiling refinement of his talents. Tom sums his songwriting philosophy up in typically unshowy fashion: “it’s about taking a personal subject that I think everyone can relate to and giving it life by adding a hopeful melody.”

If the shadows and monsters are getting to you, Campfire Social are a sanctuary of warmest humanity and crackling, luminous melancholy. The kind of melancholy that makes the heart flutter and take flight. Come and sit next to them. There’s plenty of room for everyone.

Three piece indie-pop band Peaness formed in Chester, England in late 2014. The debut EP “No Fun” was released Aug 20th 2015 and is available online now. The trio have gigged extensively up and down the country in the space of a year, winning 'the hearts of unsuspecting listeners across the length and breadth of the DIY scene, right through to BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens'.

They have been featured on local BBC Introducing shows Wales and Merseyside, BBC 6 Music and more recently BBC Radio 1 with their latest release “Oh George”. Available now is a limited edition 7' AA single of 'I'm not Your Problem / Fortune Favours The Bold' released via Canadian DIY label KINGFISHER BLUEZ.

Tickets avaliable at: music.leighfolkfestival.com

The Leigh Folk Festival is delighted to announce a one-off concert performance at St Clement’s Church, Leigh-on-Sea on Saturday June 24, starting at 6.30pm.

I Made Some Low Inquiries is an invocation to the landscapes of East Anglia and Eastern America through poetry and music. Based around a new cycle of poems, the piece is accompanied by powerful folk songs, dynamic sonic atmospheres and eerie imagery. The poems in this cycle twist and turn in their language, drawing on sources from Appalachian mountain ballads to Essex witchcraft and the rituals used by Suffolk men to hypnotize horses, all with an eye towards the absurd struggle to control the natural world. Musically, I Made Some Low Inquiries shifts from traditional folk ballads and shape-note singing to cathedral-like drone architectures, all alongside images of Old Weird Anglia that remind us of the futility of attempting to keep nature at bay.

Chester Live Presents: Allusondrugs & Guests (L2)

Jun 24, 7:00pm - Jun 24, 11:00pm

The Live Rooms
Chester,  CH1 3DR Map

Chester Live is delighted to bring Allusondrugs to The Live Rooms, Chester as part of their 2017 festival. The band, desbribed as '....not merely another Yorkshire band: they are perhaps one of the most spectacular and urgent groups the country has to offer', are one not to be missed on a weekend of extroadinary talent.

Allusondrugs is a smushed together, grammatically incorrect way of saying “everyone is on drugs”.

In this case 'drugs' is a metaphor for any trivial rubbish that distracts the population from paying attention to important things that are happening in the world like people dying of easily treated diseases in undeveloped countries, western superpowers using scare tactics to demonize people from other cultures so they can make everyone kill each other in the name of profit and the super rich 1% taking away your liberties to make it easier to suck up as much money as possible while your quality of life slowly decreases.

The greedy sociopaths at the top of the mountain are feasting on our souls while we sit in a stupor of ignorance, watching X Factor, eating nutrition-less, processed microwave sausage and mash while we moan about people from other countries “coming over here taking our jobs, it must be true, I saw it on the telly”. We as a society are basically just mindless drug addicts that need to wake up.

Their energetic live performances are outstanding and to date has attracted great interest in the band:

Welsh singer-songwriter SERA’s recently released ‘Little Girl’ album has received a huge amount of critical acclaim from radio and reviewers, who have embraced her cross-genre collection of songs that range from Americana to folk to rock. From BBC 6 Music to Amazing Radio and Folk Radio UK, her music has a wide appeal due to the captivating nature of her voice and lyrics. “She also has one of those voices that makes you feel like you’re engaged in a liberating experience” (Fatea Magazine).

Following a summer of gigs which included opening for Elton John at the Henley Festival, as well as performances at some of Wales’ top festivals, including Festival No:6, Gorjys Secrets, Ymuno, Tafwyl and Focus Wales, SERA has been playing and talking about her album with Gaby Roslin on BBC Radio London, chatting with Cerys Matthews on BBC Radio Merseyside, and having tracks released by boutique label Folkstock Records; her songs have been played across the UK and beyond, with audiences far and wide being introduced to Sera’s unique style of heartfelt, yet powerful, songwriting.

“Simply beautiful, I had to play it again and again” (Belles and Gals).

This year Sera has performed alongside other folk and Americana artists such as Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman, Lewis & Leigh, Duke Special and more. Known as a bilingual singer-songwriter, Sera has released many albums and EPs in English and Welsh, but ‘Little Girl’ is connecting with people in new and exciting ways.

A deep ability to connect with people through her songs, people have been drawn to her voice and her lyrics in many ways. “A thoroughly absorbing journey from start to finish” Folk Radio UK, Sera’s ‘Carry Me’ me has been taken into the hearts of Land Rover enthusiasts all over the world, including adventurer Ben Fogle, who writes of it in his latest book ‘The story of the car that conquered the world’ while her deeply personal songs such as ‘Little Girl’ and ‘Waterfall’ have moved listeners across the airwaves.

“A beautiful gem of a song” (Chris Hawkins, BBC 6 Music).

Look out for Sera’s darker side in her new single ‘Through the Night’ released for Halloween. Variation, light and shade, the new album is a real journey through Sera’s creative songwriting and performance, and a statement to her writing, co-writing and collaboration with producer Ed Al-Shakarchi. Sera performs solo acoustic sets as well as with a full Folk/Americana band.

“A stunning album on any measure” (From the Margins)

“An authentic album full of emotion and heart” (Buzz Magazine)

Support comes from Fay Moore Music who was a finalist in the Merseyrail Sound Station competition and attends the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.

Chester Live Presents: Into The Ark & Guests

Chester Live Presents: Into The Ark & Guests

Jun 25, 7:00pm - Jun 25, 11:00pm

The Live Rooms
Chester,  CH1 3DR Map

Did you watch the 2017 series of The Voice UK on ITV?

Well Chester Live are stupidly excited to announce that The Voice UK runners up Into The Ark will headline The Live Rooms, Chester as part of Chester Live 2017.

Hailing from South Wales, the Into The Ark boys were no strangers the stage before they made waves on The Voice UK. Dane & Taylor have already toured all over the UK in their camper van, and have already released music.

As one of the favourites to win The Voice UK, the duo are ready to take their musical career to another level, and already have plans for major UK tours in May and June 2017.

Into The Ark are Dane Lloyd & Taylor Jones. Hailing from Blackwood in South Wales, Dane & Taylor’s story is one that probably resonates with many aspiring musicians and dreamers across the globe. They met and bonded over their passion for gigging and their love for writing and each other’s taste in music. But it’s their hauntingly pitch perfect harmonies and beautiful lyrics that set this duo apart.

Before they met the boys were solo performers, and at their first encounter they realised they were into the same music. Dane was 14 & Taylor 18. This instant friendship enabled the boys to get on stage and perform together. A very spur of the moment thing but one they’ve not regretted. “We noticed how well our voices blended and surprisingly the response from the crowd said it all,” says Dane.

They decided they would try their hand at busking in Cardiff, and after making enough money to buy beer and pizzas one afternoon, the boys decided to cement their partnership and into the ark was born. After some time backpacking around Australia – the boys headed home to record a 4 track EP at a local studio. The tracks sounded great so they uploaded their songs to YouTube without any clue of how to crack the music industry – and at that point, the boys decided to go travelling once more and headed for Tunisia in North Africa. Dane & Taylor stayed for 6 months performing in various holiday resorts and learning about music and songwriting from people they met along the way. Whilst they were there, Sony contacted them showing an interest in their YouTube music, which prompted them to come home.

Following a few very nervous showcases in front of intimidating industry folk, the boys found management and together a plan was hatched to do things ‘old school’. The boys had saved nearly enough money from busking so borrowed a bit of cash from the Bank of Mum & Dad and bought themselves a second hand van – the idea was to stick mattresses, guitars, clothes and a sat nav in the back of the van and set off around the UK doing gigs in front of as many people as possible. No matter what the venue or the town. Their aim is to play 150 shows over the next 6 months.

Speaking about why they love music, Dane explains “When we hear Otis Redding sing it transports us to another realm. You can feel the pain, the passion and the soul in it all. Music is the only thing that really gives us this feeling. Like a chef trying to describe why he loves to cook, there are so many different tastes & textures it becomes impossible to pin point why. All you know is you like the way it tastes and I think that’s all that matters.”
