Blick Bassy LIVE

Blick Bassy LIVE

Nov 25, 8:00pm - Nov 25, 11:00pm

Liverpool Philharmonic Hall
Hope St
Liverpool,  L1 9BP Map

As part of Africa Oyé's 25th Anniversary celebrations, Cameroonian singer-songwriter Blick Bassy will perform with his three-piece band at Liverpool Philharmonic on Saturday 25 November, in association with Mellowtone.

Following the acclaimed release of Akö - an idiosyncratic yet infectiously catchy blend of guitar, banjo, cello, trombone and the artist’s soulful voice - Blick Bassy returns to Liverpool.

Akö, which received major acclaim in France, has been praised by the likes of The Guardian, The Observer, London Evening Standard and Songlines Magazine. And, as well as being played by Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe and Cerys Matthews on 6 Music and by Max Reinhardt and Mary Anne Kennedy on BBC Radio 3, Blick’s music was chosen by Apple for a worldwide ad campaign.

Written and sung by Blick Bassy - in Bassa, one of some 260 spoken languages in Cameroon - and accompanied by a unique ensemble of guitar, banjo, cello and trombone - Akö’s eleven sparklingly original tracks are a musical revelation. By chance, the studio they hired to record the album was directly below the offices of Nø Førmat!, the innovative French label run by Laurent Bizot, who happened to hear the results of this unlikely yet inspired musical alchemy.

As Laurent relates, “when I heard the first song Aké, I was stunned. It sounded like a dream, so light, a voice floating in the sky. Production was minimal but bold and the music had a feel not often heard with African songwriters. The lack of budget, the time restraints and the restriction to three musicians has conjured something entirely unique and very fresh.”

The show in Liverpool is part of Africa Oyé's 25th Anniversary celebrations, which also sees Kanda Bongo Man (7th Oct) and Omar Sosa & Seckou Keita (15th Nov) play the Philharmonic this Autumn.
