Virgin V Festival 2017 unveils the talent for this year’s Glee Comedy Tent and JBL Dance Arena – and with unrivalled comedic and dance talent in tow, this is not a line up to be taken lightly.
Giving the crowds a break from the chart topping anthems, the comedy line up will host a plethora of leading comic stars, including Lee Nelson, Seann Walsh, Joel Dommett, Dave Hill and Jen Brister, plus many more.
After winning the Best Newcomer award in 2008, Joel Dommett’s career has gone from strength-to-strength. His recent stint on I’m A Celeb ensured a laugh a minute for his fellow campmates.
“I’m super excited to be doing comedy at V festival. My favourite word starts with V. Vestibule. I’m beyond excited to see Stormzy. My mum recently called him ‘Grimezy’ and I laughed for 20 minutes. I hope to meet him and relay this story.” Joel Dommett
Simon Brodkin, or better known as his controversial alter-ego, Lee Nelson is no stranger to the comedy circuit. He’s produced and written his very own BBC Three series Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show, but is perhaps most known for his outlandish stunts and raucous behaviour, such as his famous cameo on stage with Kanye West – who knows what Nelson will bring to the Glee Comedy Tent and the Virgin V Festival stage this summer.
“Very happy to be playing V Festival this year. It’s a genuine honour to be able to help raise some extra money for Sir Richard Branson.” Lee Nelson
Also joining the comedy line up is Brighton-born, multi award-winning comedian Seann Walsh. Reviewed by The Guardian as “unquestionably the best observational comic of his generation”, Walsh won’t disappoint.
“Having reached my 30s, I thought it best to avoid festivals where I could. But my agent assures me V Fest is a chilled festival with a range of falafel stands, yurts and even has a yoga tent – the sort of festival, he said, where people even bring their kids. It is on that basis I have agreed to do it. See you there. Namaste.” Seann Walsh
Next up on the list of hilarious comics gracing the stage this summer is South-Londoner Jen Brister, famous for her politically–angled humour.
Appearing regularly on Live At The Apollo, Nevermind The Buzzcocks and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, funny guy Joe Lycett will be performing at Virgin V Festival, and delighting crowds with his quick wit.
“I am very much looking forward to performing at V Festival which I’ve heard can be raucous and rambunctious, so my plan is to perform a short comedy set followed by getting violently drunk on ice cold beers with the lads before downing some shots with the lads and then being removed from the site by armed police with the lads lads lads. Lads.” Joe Lycett
Irish comedy and hip-hop duo, The Rubberbandits, will no doubt be shocking the audience with their unusual attire and unique stagecraft. These Limerick lads are an act that won’t be forgotten.
Making his way across the pond is stateside star, Dave Hill. Named as one of “10 comics to watch” by Variety!, Hill will be bringing his ‘A’ game to amuse festivalgoers.
Shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Award, Laura Lexx has had crowds giggling all over the country as the recent tour support for Russell Kane.
After exploding on to the scene in 2000, Rob Deering has been dominating the comedy scene ever since. Reaching the Daily Telegraph Open Mic Award semi-finals, the finals of the BBC New Comedy Award and the final of the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year Competition, the guitar wielding comic has had crowds crowing for over 20 years.
Aussie comic Damo Clark is also joining the line up after first bursting on to the comedy circuit in 2012 with his high-octane observational stand up.
Inel Tomlinson, one half of the UK’s first black comedy double act Johnny & Inel, are performing at this year’s Virgin V Festival. The duo are well known for kids TV shows on CBBC Channel. Tomlinson will definitely be one for the kids at V this year!
Another stellar addition to the line up is Simon King, well known for his very honest podcast ‘What’s Wrong’, he’ll be bringing his thought provoking material and lightning quick delivery to the Virgin V festival crowd this summer.
Next up taking the stage is Scott Bennett, one of the fastest rising stars on the UK comedy circuit. Likeable, warm and engaging delivery, he is a Yorkshire live wire, in demand by many of the big UK clubs. His sharply written routines have been delighting audiences across the country.
Kate Lucas is an award winning musical comedian, known for her razor sharp and deliciously dark songs. Combining catchy melodies with original lyrics to showcase her playfully bitter musings on life. In 2014, Lucas took home the title of Leicester Mercury New Comedian, and will soon get her debut title at Virgin V Festival.
No matter the situation, spirits are always lifted with the presence of comedian Dave Twentyman. Known for putting a smile on every audience member’s face, his chatty and cheeky style endears him to even the toughest of crowds. Talking a lot about subjects close to home, Twentyman’s relatable topics will be sure to tickle the audience at this year’s comedy stage.
Comedy club stalwart, Matt Reed will also make his mark. Well known as half of the double act Mat & Faron with Faron Smith, he’s certainly made a name for himself as a solo act, picking up a whole host of accolades during his successful career.
Steve Shanyaski joins the comedy line up at the Glee Comedy Tent with his quick-witted humour. Voted as Birmingham Comedy Festival’s Best Breaking Talent in 2005, the captivating comic will have crowds chuckling.
Since 2000, Allyson June Smith has been tickling Canada’s comedy scene, from the moment she moved from teacher to comic. After working her way across Canada, Allyson now has taken her craft to the UK. Using her sassy blend of in-your-face standup and hilariously insightful commentary, UK audiences can’t help but fall in love with Smith’s wit.
With TV credits such as Comedy Store on Comedy Central, Marlon Davis will be bringing the joy and laughter to this year’s comedy stage. Davis began performing on the UK black comedy circuit over 12 years ago, and has been awarded with titles such as FHM’s Stand Up Hero, and has supported legendary comics Michael McIntyre and Alan Carr.
Brighton boy Michael Fabbri will also be performing. Fabbri quickly rose to fame on the UK comedy circuit after appearing in the 2003 final of Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? Since then he’s continued to make his mark on the UK comedy scene, described by Chortle as “one of the best up and coming acts around”.
Comedian and Virgin V Festival veteran, Andy Robinson, will once again take to the mic. His career has catapulted him on to shows such as Never Mind The Buzzcocks, Shooting Stars, Later with Jools Holland and Jonathan Ross.
To top it all off, TV warm-up artist Mark Olver will host proceedings on Saturday at Chelmsford and Sunday at Staffordshire, with ‘accidental’ comedian Kevin McCarthy looking after the opposite days.
JBL DANCE ARENA
Over on the JBL Dance Arena, Steve Aoki takes to the top headline slot at Chelmsford on Saturday 19th August and Staffordshire on Sunday 20th August. Meanwhile, Gorgon City will play the headline slot on the opposite days with Hannah Wants and Example & DJ Wire taking to the decks just ahead of the English electronic duo.
Also playing on the same day will be Disciples, fresh from their performance on the BBC Radio 1 dance stage on Friday night at Weston Park, Staffordshire. The South London trio soared to the top of the charts in February 2015 with ‘They Don’t Know’. The deep house act followed it up with their Calvin Harris collaboration on ‘How Deep Is Your Love’ and just last month released ‘On My Mind’ which MistaJam featured as his hottest record in the world.
Having guest-performed on BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac show, Fred V and Grafix, know how to write an anthem! Hailing from Devon, these country boys are anything but quiet and rural – with drum and bass songs like ‘Forest Fires’ blasting into the UK Top 100 charts, and soon to be blasting the Virgin V Festival stage.
Toddla T encompasses a flurry of genres including hip-hop, electro, garage, dancehall and house – all combining to result in a blend of the best British urban music has to offer. Toddla T is no stranger to performing, and will be bringing his A-game to the stage this year.
Former club promoter and events manager, Tom Zanetti, is next to join the line up. With recent sensational hits such as ‘You Want Me’, there won’t be a person in the crowd not singing along.
At just 24 years of age, Jamz Supernova is becoming somewhat of a trailblazer in the DJ world. The South East Londoner began her career as a radio presenter before finding her flow on the decks, and will now bring her unique sound to Virgin V Festival.
Joining Steve Aoki on Saturday 19th August, Chelmsford and Sunday 20th August, Staffordshire are Galantis. The Swedish super duo’s sound is a mix of EDM and pop and with a string of top 10 singles, including bangers such as ‘Runaway’ and ‘Peanut Butter Jelly’.
Best known for his hit single ‘Faded’, Alan Walker is a Norwegian music producer with platinum certifications in over 10 different countries. Walker also has a reputation for hiding his identity on stage, so will be intriguing the audience this summer no doubt.
Adding to the already impressive dance line up is young British producer and DJ Sigala. Perhaps best known for smash hits such as ‘Easy Love’, ‘Sweet Lovin’, ‘Say You Do’ and ‘Give Me Your Love’ with John Newman; Sigala won’t disappoint as he performs these classic dance anthems.
Ranked 15th in the Top 100 DJs by DJ Magazine, Don Diablo is next up to hit the decks. Diablo started early with his first record deal agreed at the tender age of 15. Since then, Diablo has gone from strength to strength, playing some of the largest stages in the world, and now brings his charisma and show stopping dance tunes to the Virgin V Festival stage.
Despite the plural in the name, Digital Farm Animals is a one-man band, comprising of producer Nicholas Gale. Having written songs with Dua Lipa, Little Mix and Louisa Johnson, Gale will be bringing his undeniable talent and impressive sound to Chelmsford and Staffordshire this year.
Lost Kings are an American DJ duo with an original EDM/progressive house music sound. Famous for remixing popular songs, the crowd will no doubt be entertained by what Lost Kings have to offer.
