Groundwerk is a monthly series of free practical workshops for artists and creatives wishing to gain the skills to support their practice.

This workshop is free to attend and open to all but booking is recommended as spaces are limited.

Just £5 gets you in and advance tickets are available from the bar at The Comrades Club or via the link at www.TheTuesdayNightMusicClub.co.uk

Two great bands in one night and just a fiver to get in? That's the deal of the century made all the better when you learn that the bands are Sugarman Sam & The Voodoo Men and The Voodoo Sheiks!

WHO ARE THE VOODOO SHEIKS?
Vibrant, is an excellent word to describe the cranked up and cranked out hugely entertaining Voodoo Sheiks. The Sheiks are right in the groove and carve out some serious classic sounding R&B. There is no time to draw breath with these guys as they deliver pile driving guitar barrelling along on clipped lead runs, searing harmonica, rasped vocals and dense beats.

The party never starts until The Voodoo Sheiks smash down your front door and deliver the goods in person... Boom!

AND SUGARMAN SAM?
From the age of 13 Sam has had an un-deniable passion for all things guitar; What started as a forbidden listen to AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’ album on his fathers tape player has developed into something of great musical diversity, adaptation and all round dedication to perfection.

2007 saw The Sugarman gain his first break as guitarist for local blues bruisers ‘Ripslide’. The band garnered interest and were soon frequenting the local club circuit resulting in the prestigious ‘BASINGSTOKE LIVE’ festival, with Sam becoming a go-to session man for local acts.

Having built up a reputation as a reliable and competent player, he lent his guitar skills to sessions that showcased his incredible array of styles, including; Jazz, Country, Blues, Heavy Metal and Progressive but to name a few

It was always going to come back to what was at heart; the blues. Sugarman Sam is now back firmly playing classic british blues/rock with his power quartet, The Voodoo Men; live music is where the band shines best and playing live is just where they'll be!

Ciagle pod górę / All the time uphill // Seth Pimlott Residency

Ciagle pod górę / All the time uphill // Seth Pimlott Residency

Nov 29, 11:00am - Dec 10, 5:00pm

Turf Projects
46-47 Trinity Court, Whitgift Centre
Croydon,  CR0 1UQ Map

Open Wed-Sun 11-5pm // Free + open to all

Seth Pimlott will be bringing his film work in-development, ‘Ciągle pod górę / All the time uphill‘ to Turf Projects during a residency in December.

Developed as Gasworks’ participatory artist in residence, Seth has been working with Poles Connect for over 9 months, a local group that seeks to connect and support Polish women of all ages across Lambeth and Croydon.

Through workshops with different generations of women from the community, Seth has explored the intersection of their personal biographies – for example, the experience of becoming a mother and raising children in a foreign country – and national histories of Poland. Ciągle pod górę (‘All the time uphill’), takes the form of an operatic odyssey up Streatham Hill. A Polish mother is forced to confront her anxieties around the hostile atmosphere of her adopted country, and her ambivalent nostalgia towards her native one, as well as her feelings about her young son as he grows, as he must, away from her and Poland.

While Seth works on ‘Ciągle pod górę‘, his previous collaborative efforts will be shown in the gallery. Seth’s work explores something personally relevant to the people he works with: the history of an idea, a private interior world, or unresolved anxieties and experiences tied to their circumstances and identity. Workshops involve a process of creatively engaging with their concerns, and place a certain faith in the power of the imagination to master one’s own narrative. This process organically suggests certain modes, genres or methods of filmmaking, and together they embark on a collaborative development process.

These might take the form of science fiction films developed with children (Reality and Technology Enterprises, BFI/Welcome Trust, 2015), or experiments in 16mm with the singer Ladan Hussein (Season of Doubt, New Contemporaries 2017), which will be available to view at Turf over the duration of the residency. ‘The Wind from Nowhere‘ (2016) will also be screened, a more personal film that explores the artists’ own memories, developed using many of the same techniques he employs when working with other people.

During the residency Turf will also host:

– Rehearsals with the Ciągle pod górę group in preparation for filming.

– Family Art Fun Day // Greenscreening! A drop-in family film-making workshop on Saturday 2 December, 12-2pm for children of all ages: explore the possibilities of green screen technology and camera techniques to create fun moving portraits of you and your family.

– An artist-led crit on Saturday 16 December, 12-2pm

The residency will promote Seth’s project with the local Polish community, but also invite the public and those involved in the project into the collective spirit and energy of his wider film work.

Dispossession (PG) + Panel Discussion

Dispossession (PG) + Panel Discussion

Nov 29, 7:45pm - Nov 29, 10:30pm

Harris Academy South Norwood, Cumberlow Ave London, SE25 6AE Map

Take a look into the battle for social housing with this thought provoking documentary that spans the length of Britain in a quest for the truth. Described as “one of the nation’s biggest scandals” it is a must see independent film for fans of powerful documentary.

For some people, a housing crisis means not getting planning permission for a loft conversion. For others it means, quite simply, losing their home. Dispossession: The Great Social Housing Swindle is a feature documentary directed by Paul Sng (Sleaford Mods – Invisible Britain) and narrated by Maxine Peake, exploring the catastrophic failures that have led to a chronic shortage of social housing in Britain. The film focuses on the neglect, demolition and regeneration of council estates in London, Glasgow and Nottingham, and investigates how the state works with the private sector to demolish council estates to build on the land they stand on, making properties that are unaffordable to the majority of people in the UK.

Dispossession is the story of people fighting for their communities, of people who know the difference between a house and a home, and who believe that housing is a human right, not an expensive luxury.

Followed by a panel discussion with Jad Adams (Chair, Nightwatch), Alison Butler (Cabinet Member for Homes, Regeneration & Planning), Aysen Dennis (Campaigner for Council Housing, Aylesbury Estate), Sean Fitzsimons (Chair of Housing Scrutiny Sub Committee in Croydon), David Robinson (Head of Operations, Evolve Housing / CR Zero 2020) and Martin Wright (Housing Activist from the East End).

This event is hosted in support of Croydon-based homeless charity Nightwatch - Homeless Charity.

Cinderella and The Beanstalk

Cinderella and The Beanstalk

Dec 1, 7:30pm - Dec 10, 4:30pm

Stanley Halls
12 South Norwood Hill
London,  SE25 6AB Map

Comic playwrights and all round Christmas enthusiasts the Sleeping Trees have written a pantomime. They’ve knuckled down, finished the script, fashioned the props, hired the costumes, booked the venue and built the set. But they have forgotten one vital component; a cast.

Cinderella and the Beanstalk is a delectable cocktail of your favourite pantomimes. Follow Cinderella on a perilous adventure as the scheming Rumple Stiltskin blackmails the would-be princess into retrieving the coveted golden eggs from the top of the beanstalk.

Cinderella must complete her quest in order to recover her glass slipper, but with Prince Charming, the Fairy Godmother, Jack’s pregnant cow and several other lesser known characters all doing their bit to get in the way, these delicious, oversized eggs may not be so easily sought out…

Sleeping Trees Productions started life as a multi-award winning comedy trio who, following a number of hit shows, were challenged to write a pantomime by their director, Tom Attenborough. The result is this original and anarchic Christmas offering for all the family, which blends the classical elements of a well-loved pantomime with an astonishing range of fast, physical and bare-knuckled comedy.

Join a brand new cast for 2017 as they recreate every character you’d expect to find in a pantomime, as well as some you might not… whilst still doing their best to sing, dance and fight their way through one hundred minutes of panto pandemonium!

Recommended Age: 8+ (and adults too!)
Duration: 1 hour 55 mins (including interval)

“…a breathtakingly witty production, packed with jokes that the whole family will enjoy” ★★★★★ British Theatre

“It’s not often you find a show that can delight three generations in equal measure, so Cinderella and the Beanstalk is an absolute must-see”★★★★★ Culture Whisper

“…a stupendous performance that genuinely leaves you with face ache from laughing so much” ★★★★★ The Peg Review

“A mega-mix that’s truly mega” ★★★★ Time Out

The Sine Nomine singers present a programme of music both ancient and modern from England and Spain. Tonight's centrepiece is Vaughan Williams' Mass for double choir (1921) , often described as the first distinctively English mass since the 16th Century. Works by Vittorio and Guerrero provide some Iberian flair, with Bax and Philips bringing us back to Blighty.

The Sine Nomine Singers are a chamber choir based in South London. If you want to hear them in a less formal and more festive context, they will also be singing on Tuesday 12th December at The Oval Tavern, supporting Belshazzar's Feast (not the Walton work, the duo!)

St John's Smith Square, Smith Square
London,  SW1P 3HA Map

London Mozart Players return to St John's Smith Square alongside Howard Shelley for their highly anticipated Piano Explored lunchtime series. In their Christmas special, the ensemble's Conductor Laureate unlocks the internal anguish and despair of the Russian composer in his Piano Concerto No. 2, a birthday gift of hope and freedom written for his son, and later the world, to enjoy.

‘The best lunch-break you’ve ever had.’ International Piano

Designed for everyone from city workers and resident Londoners to holiday-makers day-trippers, London Mozart Players’ Piano Explored is the perfect addition to your lunch-time. In one whistle-stop hour, pianist and conductor Howard Shelley takes you on an exciting deconstruction of some of classical music’s most recognised works for piano.

In LMP's 17/18 season, audiences will uncover the anguish of Shostakovich, reminisce on a classic love story that spiralled Schumann to global success, delve into the grandeur of Mendelssohn in an exclusive two-part mini-series, whisk through Saint-Saens’ rollercoaster-esque creative process and dive into the explosive mind of Grieg.

Whitgift School
Haling Park
Croydon,  CR2 6YT Map

The Mayor is in a cold sweat. An imminent visit from a Government Inspector propels him into a frenzy. The hospital’s a health hazard, the school’s a war zone, the soldiers don’t have trousers and he never quite got around to building that church…!

A simple case of mistaken identity leads matters to spiral hysterically out of control in Gogol’s satirical masterpiece; a hilarious riot of corruption, lies and greed, as relevant today as when it was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1836.

Dec 6, 7:45pm - Dec 6, 10:00pm

Harris Academy South Norwood, Cumberlow Ave London, SE25 6AE Map

Join us for Sean Baker’s critically-acclaimed, THE FLORIDA PROJECT, a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.

Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, the film follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious 22-year-old mother Halley (played by newcomers Brooklynn Prince and Bria Vinai) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget hotel managed by Bobby (Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion. Despite her harsh surroundings, Moonee has no trouble making each day a celebration of life, her endless afternoons overflowing with mischief and grand adventure as she and her ragtag playmates fearlessly explore the utterly unique world into which they've been thrown.

“Every moment of this film is glorious” - ✩✩✩✩✩ The Guardian

PLUS LOCAL SHORT:

Chandra by Asmita Shrish (2015 / Cert PG). Seven-year-old Chandra walks through earthquake-hit Kathmandu with his grandfather, to visit his mother and newborn sibling in hospital. Chandra is oblivious to the scenes of misery on the streets and is fascinated by the many curious and beautiful sights, excited about meeting his new sibling. What awaits them at the end?

Hideaway presents BOND

Dec 7, 8:30pm - Dec 7, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

It’s just not Christmas without a fix of BOND – expect some classy new jazz arrangements as iconic Bond themes are given a new twist by a stellar line up led by Hideaway Musical Director Janette Mason with the sublime vocals of David McAlmont and Natasha Watts.

Enjoy fresh arrangements of stylish masterpieces such as Diamonds are Forever, Goldfinger and Live and Let Die, shaken (but not stirred) into a cocktail of glitz, glamour and fabulous music. Martini cocktails served from our bar, tuxedos and cocktail dresses optional but preferred.

Line up: David McAlmont (Vocals) Natasha Watts (Vocals), Janette Mason (MD / Keys), Tom Mason (Bass), Davide Giovannini (Drums), Emlyn Francis (Guitar), Shanti Jayasinha (Trumpet), Richard Beesley (Saxophone), Martin Gladdish (Trombone)

David McAlmont (vocal)

Possibly one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced, having collaborated with everyone from Bond composer David Arnold to Michael Nyman, Paul Weller and most famously with Bernard Butler producing the classic hit single Yes. McAlmont's music is pure emotion, drawing unique, soulful portraits from his own life and philosophies, all beautifully framed by the finest soul.
Natasha Watts

Award-winning soul star and Cool Million collaborator, Natasha Watts returns to the stage from her solo show here in September. With three number one singles and a Soul Survivors award under her belt, Natasha has worked alongside Rob Hardt from Cool Million and Richard Earnshaw to complete her new album.

"Natasha’s voice, soft and reassuring yet capable of the bellowing power of Shirley Bassey” Mi Soul

2012 saw Natasha burst on to the soul scene with the Cool Million single, 'Show Me Off’, this was to be the start of Natasha & Rob Hardt working together on numerous projects, including her eponymous debut which made top ten lists across the country and received airplay on stations such as BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Manchester, Solent and Jazz FM - where it was named album of the week.

Off the back of that wonderful album Natasha was chosen to support Soul Queen, Gladys Knight, on her UK Tour, earning rave reviews along the way.
Janette Mason (keys)

Even without knowing it, there’s a fair chance if you’ll have heard Janette’s special musical touch time and again - on many albums from Ian Shaw to Robert Wyatt, live in concert with Oasis plus her contributions to movie and TV soundtracks.

A talented composer and arranger, she was recently commissioned to write the score for feature film, The Calling, contributed four arrangements to Ian Shaw’s album, Drawn to all Things, and produced and arranged Lea DeLaria’s current Warner Brothers release, The Live Smoke Sessions, which made the Grammy ballot.

As a Jazz musician, she has been a seminal figure on the British Jazz scene for the last fifteen years, sharing the stage with Mornington Lockett, Julian Siegel and many more.

Last year the Feastie Boys' festive concert sold out so we're having them for two nights in a row. Book early to avoid disappointment as we had to turn people away last year.

On tour with a Christmas-themed show that mixes traditional folk music, seasonal material, added to their usual touch of classical and jazz, with a bit of pop and music hall, all topped off with lashings of wry humour. Paul Sartin (of Bellowhead and Faustus) and Paul Hutchinson (of Hoover The Dog) together wow audiences across the UK with their eclectic and eccentric mix of tunes and between songs chat that always sends audiences home with smiles on their faces.
‘Their music is breathtaking and wickedly inventive and the between-tunes interchange as intelligent and hilarious as the music.’ Mike Harding, previously of BBC Radio 2 Folk Show

Support from local vocal group The Sine Nomine Singers.
Tickets are £12.50. Contact us to make arrangements if bringing anyone under 18.

God's Own Country (15) + Q&A

Dec 13, 7:45pm - Dec 13, 10:00pm

Harris Academy South Norwood, Cumberlow Ave London, SE25 6AE Map

Escape to the heart of the broodingly beautiful Yorkshire Pennines with this award-winning debut feature from writer/director Francis Lee. Hailed as the UK’s answer to Brokeback Mountain, God’s Own Country is a thrilling love story about two men seeking warmth, connection and belonging in the harsh wilderness that surrounds them. Featuring a host of standout performances, this film has been marked as one this this year’s essential big screen experiences.

A young sheep farmer works long hours on his family’s remote farm in the north of England. He numbs the daily frustration of his lonely existence with nightly binge-drinking at the local pub and casual sex. But when a handsome Romanian migrant worker arrives to take up temporary work on the family farm, Johnny suddenly finds himself having to deal with emotions he has never felt before.

Join us after the film for a Q&A with producer Manon Ardisson.

Plus short: Dial-A-Ride (2017) by George Cowie

Continuing with the theme of connection and companionship in the remote British countryside, Forest Hill-based George Cowie takes us on a journey through rural South Wales. Passengers on a community bus reveal all the joys, challenges and quirks of growing old, with a mix of fly-on-the-wall moments and intimate stories.

George Bailey never got a chance to fulfill his life's ambitions of exploring the world. As he watches his friends and family become success stories, he gives up his dreams for the good of his town. When a financial error drives him to contemplate ending his life, an angel is sent from Heaven to show him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

The film was suggested by community members Rose Sage-Morrish and Jennifer Bowling:

"The film to me is about support, living life and accepting challenges and struggles head-on, as they will make you a stronger person." - Jennifer

"Watching this Capra Classic has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. Seeing it on the big screen & sharing this moment with others will be a wonderful gift indeed!" - Rose

Get into the Christmas spirit and arrive early for a special workshop for all ages with Blooming Desires and a visit our very own Santa’s grotto. A licensed bar will be available serving mulled wine, mince pies and other festive treats.

Doors 1.30pm / Film 2.30pm

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Dec 22, 7:00pm - Dec 22, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Bassist and bandleader Gary Crosby brings Jazz Jamaica back to Hideaway for a festive Christmas special! Mixing up jazz and ska classics, bringing in some reggae vibes and performing with a swing and zeal that has made them festival favourites around the world, Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as 'one of the UK's leading good-time bands' (The Independent).

“Jazz Jamaica should be permanent ambassadors to the United Nations of Good Times.” Cheltenham International Jazz Festival

In 1991, inspired by the rhythms of traditional Jamaican music and the largely improvisational nature of jazz, original Jazz Warrior and veteran jazz double bassist, Gary Crosby, turned a musical concept into a joyful reality. Crosby's concept was to create a quintessential fusion of mento, ska, reggae and jazz, playing classic and modern jazz standards alongside Jamaican folksongs. The result was Jazz Jamaica.

Since its realisation, Crosby has developed the Jazz Jamaica concept by introducing a stream of talented young jazz musicians, so increasing the size of the pool of Jazz Jamaicans, and enabling him to push the boundaries of the music played. Collectively, Crosby and his musicians represent the finest exponents of this unique musical fusion known as skazz, a fusion loved and appreciated by everyone, of all ages and colours around the globe. In 2002, Jazz Jamaica All Stars were winners of the BBC Radio Jazz Award for Best Band.

Crosby’s leadership and drive continue to ensure the evolution of Jazz Jamaica – a process that is encapsulated by the recent headline grabbing collaborative project “Catch A Fire” that saw the band join a 240 voice choir, the Urban Soul Orchestra and Brinsley Forde (Aswad) in a celebration of the music of Bob Marley at the Royal Festival Hall this Summer.

Judi Jackson is a multi-talented actor and jazz vocalist from Virginia who, aged 14, was fortunate enough to meet Wynton Marsalis at the Jefferson Center performance hall after a show. He sent her a box of music the following Christmas that became the seed of inspiration for her development as a jazz vocalist. She began listening to and studying the sounds of Blossom Dearie, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mahalia Jackson, amongst many other greats. She continued studying over the next several years and started gaining more experience as a performer by opening for acts such as Mavis Staples. Shortly thereafter she released her first album, “Crashing down” with Judi and the Giants, on the Music Lab's label. Judi has shared the stage with Snarky Puppy, and recorded her original piece, “Only Love”, with the Grammy award winning group.

NYE Soul and Groove Party feat. Ray Simpson

Dec 31, 7:00pm - Jan 1, 1:00am

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

It’s New Year’s Eve and time for a big SOUL and GROOVE party with our special guest, UK soul man extraordinaire Ray Simpson (Cymande, Soul II Soul, Incognito and more) serving up two sets of stone cold soul classics and dance floor fillers as we say hello to 2018 in style here in SW16!

Ticket price includes a glass of bubbly on arrival and a 4 course meal.

Ray Simpson is a British based recording artist who was inspired by the soulful sounds of Motown, Stax, Atlantic Records, Philadelphia International and others, which led him to follow his dreams and achieve a career as a musician.

Ray went on to develop a varied solo career as a vocalist, producer and songwriter, writing for himself and other popular artists such as Maxi Priest, Sugar Minott and Al Campbell to name a few.

In 1984 Ray signed recording and publishing deals with Island Records and Blue Mountain Music, and started to actively explore soul and funk music. He collaborated with Jean Paul Maunick (Bluey), of Incognito, to record vocals on a project produced by Maunick and also toured with Incognito.

In 1989 Ray was signed by Circa Records and recorded his self-titled debut album ‘Ray Simpson’, produced by celebrated American producer Michael J Powell (whose production credits include work with Anita Baker, Randy Crawford among others).

Over the years Ray has worked with Will Downing, Jocelyn Brown, Loose Ends, Maysa Leak and Caron Wheeler and was a featured soloist with Soul II Soul on their album ‘Time For Change’ on which he penned the single ‘Pleasuredome‘.

Ray’s connection with Cymande dates back to the origin of the band in the 70’s, when as a young schoolboy he would watch the band practice in their Brixton basement and thereafter follow their progress with great interest through the connection between his family and the family of Sam Kelly and Derrick Gibbs. That connection was made complete as Ray joined the newly reformed Cymande, touring the US with the band in 2016.

Joining Ray on stage will be Sam Kelly (drums, Cymande), Ray Carless (sax, Cymande, Incognito), Richard Sadler (bass, Kinks, Paul Weller Neil Cowley Trio), Paul Jobson (keys, Chaka Khan, Omar, Joss Stone), Michael ‘Lally’ Carey (guitar) and Kevin Davy (trumpet, Cymande, Finlay Quaye).

Hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. The story unfolds on land, sea and air. RAF Spitfires engage the enemy in the skies above the Channel, trying to protect the defenseless men below. Meanwhile, hundreds of small boats manned by both military and civilians are mounting a desperate rescue effort, risking their lives in a race against time to save even a fraction of their army.

Dunkirk features a multigenerational ensemble cast, including Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and Harry Styles.

Plus local short:

THE ROOK (2015) by Smari Gunn

London,  SW16 2BF Map

We welcome back ‘Charlie Parker On Dial’ – a tribute to jazz genius Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker, written and arranged by Alex Webb (creator of Cafe Society Swing), with vocalist Deelee Dube (the first British winner of the US Sarah Vaughan vocal award in 2016)

'Good script, good concept, fantastic music' - London Jazz News

‘An unadulterated delight’ - Birdlives.co.uk

‘A continuously exuberant ride ... performed by a band as razor-sharp as those suits’ - Jazzwise.com

Charlie Parker On Dial focuses on just two years of Bird’s hectic life – the period he recorded with Ross Russell’s Dial label, producing classics such as Ornithology, Night in Tunisia, Relaxin’ at Camarillo, Scrapple From The Apple and Klacto-veeseds-tene – and revolutionising 1940s jazz in the process.

Alto sax virtuoso Nathaniel Facey leads this narrated celebration of jazz genius Charlie Parker, with a band including Alex Webb (narrator / piano /MD), special guest vocalist Deelee Dube (the first British winner of the US Sarah Vaughan vocal award in 2016), Freddie Gavita (trumpet), Aliocha Thevenet (guitar), Andy Cleyndert (bass), Shane Forbes (drums).

Susan Cadogan

Susan Cadogan

Jan 12, 9:00pm - Jan 12, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

We are excited to welcome back the great Susan Cadogan to Hideaway! One of Jamaica's best-loved singers of ‘Hurt So Good’, ‘Nice & Easy’, ‘Piece Of My Heart’ - from the ground-breaking tracks and solid gold hits she recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry at the height of his seminal Black Ark Studio heyday through to Top Of The Pops appearances and lovers rock classics, Susan’s recorded output has never been less than sensational and her live performances remain truly mesmerizing.
With a delicate voice that shimmers between childlike innocence and smoldering sexuality, Susan Cadogan's vocals were the perfect expression of lovers rock. Surprisingly, she never intended to sing professionally, and thus her music career has been sporadic but, such was her talent, Cadogan was rightly crowned the Queen of Lovers Rock.

Born Alison Anne Cadogan on November 2, 1951, in Kingston, Jamaica, she came from a musical family, and her mother had in fact released a number of gospel records during her childhood. The family emigrated to Belize in the mid-'50s, but returned to Jamaica at the end of decade, where Cadogan continued her schooling. Upon graduation, she took a job working in the library at the University of the West Indies in Mona. And there she might have remained, had it not been for DJ Jerry Lewis, the boyfriend of one of Cadogan's friends.

Impressed by her voice, the DJ took her into the JBC studio in 1974 to record his own composition, 'Love My Life', which he produced himself. Producer Lee "Scratch" Perry was at JBC that same day and was also mightily impressed with Cadogan's talent. Perry swiftly swooped in and took the singer under his wing. He renamed her Susan, and set to work in the studio, where he had her record an album's worth of cover songs.

The first fruits of these sessions was the rousing 'Hurts So Good', a cover of Millie Jackson's soul classic. Even though the single, released on Perry's own Perries label, included such musicians as the Zap Pow horn section and bassist Boris Gardiner, it received virtually no attention from the Jamaican public. It was a different story in Britain, where Perry had licensed the single. After dominating at 1974's Notting Hill Carnival, an astute remix quickly flew to the top of the reggae chart. That success prompted the bigger Magnet label to license the single and by March, "Hurts" was sitting in the Top Five of the U.K. national chart.

Cadogan was soon on her way to London, where she made several national TV appearances. While there, the singer inked a deal with Magnet, prompting Perry to license his own recordings with her to a variety of small U.K. labels. Amazingly enough, none of these singles charted; however in 1976, Perry handed all his tapes of Cadogan to Trojan, who released them as the sublime Hurts So Good album.

Mozart C Minor Mass and Jupiter Symphony

Mozart C Minor Mass and Jupiter Symphony

Mar 24, 7:30pm - Mar 24, 9:15pm

St John's, Wimbledon
Spencer Hill
London,  SW19 4NZ Map

The Academy Choir Wimbledon is very excited to be presenting a wonderful programme of Mozart and Haydn alongside the London Mozart Players. This concert will be taking place at St John's Church, Spencer Hill, Wimbedon at 7.30 pm on Saturday 24 March.

This will be a really wonderful concert - Mozart's C Minor Mass is rightly numbered among the greatest choral works ever written whilst his 41st and final symphony is regarded by many commentators as at least one of his finest. Haydn's Te Deum complements this programme very thoughtfully - few write music as invigorating as Haydn - and will open the concert.

Filled with drama, virtuosity and a clear sense of hope, Mozart's C Minor Mass is a true great - in 2015 Pope Francis commented that one movement - the Et incarnatus est - "is matchless; it lifts you to God!". Brahms observed of Mozart's 39th, 40th and 41st Symphonies that: “I am able to understand ... that Beethoven's first symphony did impress people colossally. But the last three symphonies by Mozart are much more important.” Praise indeed!

The Academy Choir Wimbledon - under renowned Music Director Matthew Best - is developing a reputation as one of the finest choirs of its sort in London and for the first time is collaborating with the London Mozart Players (the UK's longest established chamber orchestra with an outstanding reputation developed through consistent excellence). Our soloists will be a delight and include the sopranos Soraya Mafi (an ENO Harewood Artist who won the 2016 Susan Chilcott Award and placed second in the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Award) and Rhian Lois (an exciting Welsh soprano who is an ENO Harewood Artist and has made acclaimed appearances with the ENO, Welsh National Opera and Royal Opera House) as well as tenor Alessandro Fisher (who won the joint first prize at the 2016 Kathleen Ferrier Awards).

Tickets range in price from just £5 (for well behaved children!) to a top price of £25. Several rows in the top price band will be reserved for use by members of our Friends scheme (which can be joined from £5 per month) - please do see our website for further details.

Muddy Waters Remembered - Annual Celebration of the Music of Muddy Waters

Apr 19, 7:00pm - Apr 19, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

This big annual celebration of the music of the most influential blues man of all time returns to Hideaway. Join the great and good of British Blues as they pay their respects to the man who bought us "Mojo Working" and "Hoochie Coochie Man", influencing and shaping music for generations to come.
The John O'Leary and Alan Glen All Stars lead proceedings - serving up great tunes from the Muddy Waters songbook and being joined by a stack of special guests. This is always a fantastic night of music and fun with everyone performing being united by one thing... a deep rooted love of the music of MISTER McKINLEY MORGANFIELD.

John O’Leary
John was one of the pioneers of the art of the blues harmonica in the UK. Originally from Ireland, John's family was part of the massive migration to England in the aftermath of World War 2. In London's thriving jazz clubs of the 1960's he first heard blues harp player Cyril Davies with Alexis Korner's Blues Inc.

John bought his first instrument in 1962 and learned to play by listening and watching Davies. Inevitably, he discovered the great masters of the blues harmonica; Sonny Boy Williamson No.1, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Noah Lewis, James Cotton, Shakey Horton and Junior Wells. John's career has seen his involvement with numerous bands and musicians over four decades. Beginning in 1965 with Savoy Brown's Blues Band through to the present day John O'Leary & Sugarkane, John has continued to maintain a prominent position on the British and European blues scene.

Alan Glen
Alan Glen is a British blues harmonica player and guitarist, best known for his work with The Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe, and his own bands, The Barcodes and The Incredible Blues Puppies.

Glen started playing harmonica after seeing Muddy Waters, and the 'American Folk-Blues Festivals' which visited London in the late 1960's and early 1970's, his early influences being Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Junior Wells. Early bands he was involved with were Crowjane Bluesband, The Radical Sheiks and Brothers Grimm, before going on to join Nine Below Zero (1991–1995), and The Yardbirds (1996–2003 and 2008–2009).

Glen has played on over 50 albums and recorded/performed with Alannah Myles, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Slash, John Mayall, Steve Lukather, and has also recorded six albums with Little Axe.

The John O'Leary / Alan Glen Allstars featuring:
John O'Leary (Savoy Brown / John Dummer Blues Band), Alan Glen (Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe), Alan Vincent (Shakey Vick Band), Tim Penn (Gordon Smith, Kevin Coyne), Glynn Evans (Martha & The Vandellas, Ray Davies), Peter Miles (Radical Sheiks, Jo-Anne Kelly)

"Opening up with The Jive Aces, the energy level quickly soars through the roof as the band starts stomping with some infectious, high-speed swing music that parallels the energy of 50s rock 'n' roll with all the silk and glamour of '40s swing. Truly modern, and making no claims otherwise, the band seems to be on a caffeine high as they shoot and dance around the notes with such clarity. I’ll give it an A." In Music We Trust - CD review

“Jive Aces rocked us, literally. If they were playing at any event they would raise the roof with their quirky banana suits and energetic moves.” Dean “Midas” Maynard - Huffington Post
