The Floacist, Maisha and Triforce plus DJ Dave Koor

The Floacist, Maisha and Triforce plus DJ Dave Koor

Nov 16, 7:00pm - Nov 16, 11:00pm

Stanley Halls
12 South Norwood Hill
London,  SE25 6AB Map

Part of London Jazz Festival 2017. Seven-time Grammy nominee The Floacist curates and headlines a special evening at Stanley Halls (South Norwood Hill, SE25) celebrating the on-going cultural explosion in South London that has witnessed the emergence of some of the most exciting young British jazz talent for many years. Joining Floacist on the line-up are Maisha, Triforce and DJ Dave Koor (Albert’s Favourites).

Natalie ‘Floacist’ Stewart is the founding member of the ground breaking seven-time Grammy nominated, platinum selling, UK International Neo-Soul sensation Floetry. Returning to her South London roots with her unique blend of poetry and song, this will be a night not to be missed.

Live music and pure vibrations. It's Floetic!

Maisha fuse a range of diverse influences to create a sound that has been lighting up parties and jazz clubs all over London. A live act not to be missed, and with an album in the works, 2017 is shaping up to be a strong year for this six piece band.

Channeling the lineage of spiritual jazz, taking inspiration from Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and Idris Mohammad, Maisha fuse their jazz influences with West African and Afro-beat rhythms, courtesy of bandleader Jake Long(2016 Yamaha Jazz Scholar) and percussionist Tim Doyle. Twm Dylan keeps the groove alive on double bass, Shirley Tetteh kills it on rhythm and lead guitar, Amané Suganami brings the heat on keys and Nubya Garcia delivers sax hooks that replay in your head for days.

With an average age of nineteen, TriForce is a jazz-infused, hip-hop, neo soul band featuring Dominic Canning, Ricco Komolafe and Benjamin Appiah who came together on their first year at Middlesex University - finding their common interest in the music of Thundercat, J Dilla, and Funky Knuckles. Guitarist, Mansur Brown, completes the line up for this band that has already made a name for themselves on the London alternative jazz scene and been signed to the Jazz Re:Freshed artist development programme.

Plus special DJ set from Dave Koor, founder of the Albert’s Favourites label (Hector Plimmer, The Expansions, Scrimshire, Jonny Drop, Modified Man and Deoke).

They are just getting better and better and better! Here's a review of a recent appearance "A really fun night catching up with the wonderful Yoka and the Sugarbeats. It's been a while since I've caught a full band show and left the venue wondering just how I've allowed that to happen. This is a really accomplished band that can not only do their thang to an extremely high level of competence, but they have the ability to entertain with a capital E. You only needed to look around at those present to see how much enjoyment was being given by this terrific band. A packed pub of punters, from all generations could be seen gyrating and jiving as Yoka and the boys served up a mix of originals and covers alike, whipping up a storm. But don't get the wrong impression about this band. They are not just some function band that have mastered the necessary thirty something party favourites, filling the floor with Hi Ho Silver Lining. No, these are seriously good musicians that can do the lot, Blues, Soul, Rock and anything in between. The covers are not copies, they are perceptive takes on a eclectic selection of quality tunes and the originals are simply that.....original. Yoka's voice really does need to be heard to be believed; a wonderful range of passion and phrasing that nails everything she takes on. Yes, I know everyone does 'I'd rather go blind', but check this lady out. Oh and if you think that was a fluke, her rendition of Beth Hart's 'Tell her you belong to me' will leave you breathless, just a beautiful thing. The big man on the axe, Ray Qureshi is a quality player and last night rocked the house with his guitar work, particularly on Comfortably Numb, performed using his own Qureshi Bespoke Guitar (get your order in now people) not to mention a bit of AC/DC and Zeppelin. The line up is completed by Andrew Pullin (Bass), Andrew Papas (Keys) and Spencer Andromeda Pseudoreliabilium Blackledge (Drums), all of whom are highly rated.
So, this is a really, really, REALLY good band that I suggest you go and see. You will be impressed and entertained in equal measure and if you're not smiling when it's over, I'll buy you a beer.

Bob Marley: The Making Of A Legend (12A) + Filmmaker Q&A

Oct 25, 7:45pm - Oct 25, 10:30pm

Holy Innocents Church South Norwood
London, Greater London,   Map

We are delighted to welcome Esther Anderson for a rare screening of her documentary based on personal lost-and-found footage of Bob Marley from the 1970s. Followed by special Q&A hosted by Dr Michelle Asantewa, in partnership with Black History Walks.

Using footage shot in the early 70s and lost for more than thirty years, NAACP Image Awards winner and Jamaican actress Esther Anderson takes us on a personal journey to Jamaica and into 56 Hope Road, Kingston, to see and hear the young Bob Marley before he was famous.

While exploring the powerful relationship between Esther and Marley, the film shows us the Wailers’ first rehearsal, when the idea of a Jamaican supergroup like the Beatles or the Stones was still just a dream. We also sit in on the launch of their international career with "Get Up Stand Up", "I Shot The Sheriff", and the “Burnin'” and "Catch a Fire" albums that brought to the world Reggae music and Rasta consciousness together as one, starting a revolution that would change rock music and contemporary culture forever.

Join us for the first in a series of pop-up screenings at Holy Innocents South Norwood, marking Black History Month.

Plus mouth-watering Jamaican food - from Curry Goat to steam fish - provided by Perfect Taste, a licensed bar serving beers and wine, and a signing session of limited edition DVDs and original soundtrack CDs.

They were married in 1958 and lived together in Central Point, a small town in Virginia, where they began making their home and raising a family. Oct 26, 7:00pm - Oct 26, 11:00pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

The astonishing vocals of the late Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan are brought to life for three exquisite nights with the leading ladies of vintage jazz Lily Dior and Vimala Rowe (Cafe Society Swing), and an all star band led by Hideaway's musical director Janette Mason!

Lily Dior

Recognised as one of Australia’s finest singers, Lily Dior has shared the stage with a remarkable list of outstanding musicians from Australia and around the world and has performed at many of Australia's best venues including The Opera House Concert Hall, The State Theatre, Sydney Town Hall and The Domain. A finalist at The National Jazz Awards she is also an experienced radio personality and host of The Freedman Fellowship Jazz Awards.

The daughter of professional musicians who met and married in London, Lily spent her first five years touring the world with her parents who then settled in Australia. Returning to her roots in 2014, Lily has spent the last year in London building her reputation and has already established herself as an in demand performer appearing at iconic jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The 606 Club and Pizza Express Soho.

Discovered by the late great Jackie Orszaczky as a teenager, performing a show she wrote and produced on the life of Billie Holiday, Lily became a seminal member of Sydney’s hottest Soul/Funk outfit, ‘The Godmothers’, wowing audiences with her electric stage presence and powerful voice.

“If you see only one local band this year, make sure you catch this shimmering and wonderful soul funk act” (Bruce Elder, SMH)
Vimala Rowe

In her early teens Vimala Rowe left England for the Far East where she quickly established herself as vocalist with the successful rap band TKO and then as a solo artist, writing and recording a hit album which included guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel.
She then spent a year studying Hindustani Classical vocals in Nagpur India, which profoundly influenced her future style. Back in England she made the eponymous EP ‘Vimala’ with Simon Horn, a recording of original compositions which garnered the Indy Music award for Best Soul, Jazz, Funk act, 2008.

Since then she has gone on to establish herself on the London Jazz Scene as a remarkable live performer, appearing with such luminaries as John Etheridge, Bobby Wellins, Jonathan Gee and others.
Her performances have captivated audiences everywhere with notable appearances at Ronnie Scott’s with the Alex Webb Band, The London Jazz Festival (Crazy Coqs) with John Etheridge and at The Leicester Square Theartre in the musical Cafe Society Swing. Her mix of Jazz sophistication and swing, soulful passion and a hint of Indian exoticism is enthralling.

“A captivating and seemingly effortless soulful voice” - Justin Wilkes, Kiss FM
“The Fabulous vocals of Vimala Rowe… stripped the songs of their datedness and brought them into the modern age” - Birdlives.co.uk

Janette Mason - Musical Director & PianoJanette Mason playing live at Hideaway.

If there's an explosion of curly red hair buzzing around at the business end of our beautiful Yamaha grand piano, and a room bursting with musically induced grins, then you can be sure it's Janette Mason at the ivories.

Appointed as Hideaway's first Musical Director in 2012, Janette's talents as a producer, arranger and band leader have left a distinctive and extremely popular mark on Hideaway's in-house productions, a series of sell-out shows that include Showtime Presents Bond and Wall to Wall: Bowie.

Also a talented composer, her Trio's 2010 CD, Alien Left Hand, was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award and her work also features on the soundtrack of award-winning independent film Ruby Blue, starring Bob Hoskins.

Her credits as an elite keyboard player include Oasis, Seal, Pulp and Robert Wyatt, as well as the cream of the UK's jazz talent including Clare Martin and Ian Shaw.

Oct 27, 8:00pm - Oct 27, 10:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Top night of stand up comedy with STEVE N ALLEN (BBC2's The Mash Report plus LUKE BENSON & ROBYN PERKINS (MC) and extra funny guests!

Steve N Allen
As seen on BBC 2's The Mash Report as the News Presenter, Steve is an experienced comedian at home in any slot on the bill, with a warm and upbeat act that soon connects with any audience. His material ranges from an observational look at life to up to date topical comedy or shows solely based on the interaction with the crowd. As a stand-up Steve has performed all across the UK in clubs including The Comedy Store, Comedy Cafe and Up The Creek, as well as performing at comedy festivals in Edinburgh, Brighton and Leicester with versions of his solo topical comedy show that dissects the news and how we use it. Steve can also often be heard as a news commentator and satirist TV and radio, including LBC and BBC London and has hosted his own shows for the BBC.

"Allen hits the mark, with an effusive mix of biting satire and gleeful mud-slinging that recalls Russell Howard by way of Ian Hislop. More than worth a look." Three Weeks

"What was evident here, is the performer is quality, his mockery, and the excellent use of accents combined with clever voice-over interaction; is a performer with masses of talent." - Fringe Review

"His improvisation was impressive, topical jokes quick and practised on his tongue to mix up with his banter with the audience. This is a tight, upbeat show that I would recommend going to see." - Broadway Baby

"Very funny... cutting wit" - Time Out

Luke Benson

Geordie Giant Luke Benson is an award-winning comedian/writer/voice-over artist with 8 years in stand up. Working mainly in the UK, he's also performed in Scandinavia, the Middle-East, the Balkans & Spain.

He’s written & performed 3 solo-shows at various festivals, garnering 4 & 5 star reviews and sell outs.

His TV/Radio credits include performances on Channel 4, 5, BBC Radio 1, 5live, 6music & Capital Radio. He’s written for Sky, Virgin & the BBC. Aside from live work he hosted a show on Shoreditch Radio for 2 years, broadcasting as live and pre-record. Recently he created and helmed the NUFC podcast – “Newcastle Natter”.

“Impressive verbal dexterity that was thoughtful, clever and very funny. He did it again later, and then again…Luke Benson is a genuinely funny guy and deserves more than his fair share of the Edinburgh audience.” – Gigglebeats

“A quirky observational set that earns him lots of applause…He looks the part, he’s got the talent, and it’s easy to imagine him on the telly..” Sunday Times

“A confident and experienced comic, quick as a whippet with razor-sharp intelligence, delivering punch lines with fantastic physicality.” – Broadway Baby

London,  CR0 1UW Map

In this free artists’ workshop, learn how to write artist statements which accurately represent you and your work with Owain McGilvary & Yan White of McGilvary/White.

“We often think of the roles people play in art and think about the artists’ role within the work (specifically us) that act like ‘signatures’ and how you can subvert these aspects by using funniness and playfulness. Does that make sense?” – from McGilvary/White interview at Young Artists in Conversation by James Harper.

Groundwerk is a monthly series of free practical workshops for artists and creatives wishing to gain the skills to support their practice.

This workshop is free to attend and open to all but booking is recommended as spaces are limited.

The Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan

The Music of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan

Oct 28, 7:00pm - Oct 28, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Blending Chicago blues with the influences of his Jamaican heritage into an inspiring and intoxicating mix for this album launch special.
‘Britain, once a blues powerhouse, has several fascinating new talents. Most notable is Errol Linton’ Sunday Times

‘ A gifted bluesman…refreshingly free of clichés’ Independent On Sunday

‘A voice that can be surprisingly sweet or get close to the sound of a young Muddy Waters …a timeless feel’ R2

Errol Linton

“A good friend sold me a harmonica one day, started blowing on it, never stopped, the harp lead me to the blues, not the other way ’round.”

In 1991 a chance meeting with John Walters, BBC Radio 2 producer led to radio session on the Andy Kershaw Show and in 1993 Errol was featured along side Big Bill Broonzy in BBC 2’s Arena documentary (Rhythms of the World) called Two Generations of the Blues.

1995 saw Errol touring Spain and the UK with Henry Gray, piano player for 14 years in the mighty Howlin’ Wolf. Linton’s band have opened the show for Screaming Jay Hawkins, Bo Diddley, Dr John and Blind Boys of Alabama.

Linton released his first album Vibin’ It (Ruby Records) in 1998. Across the UK BBC Radio DJs Charlie Gillett, Paul Jones, John Peel and Andy Kershaw all played the album. He toured the full length of the UK and Ireland, playing festivals, clubs and pubs. Promoters in Germany, France and Spain all booked the band. They were the first UK artists to perform at Park Tower Blues Festival in Japan, on the same stage as the soulful Howard Tate and even jamming with the late great Clarence ‘Gate Mouth ‘Brown.

Michael Fabbri
Michael Fabbri quickly stamped his mark on the UK circuit appearing in the 2003 final of Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny? and rapidly earned a reputation as one of the most promising up and coming comedians on the circuit. A reputation that he is living up to, regularly performing for the best clubs in the country.
With a dark and honest approach to some of life’s more touchy subjects Fabbri manages to effortlessly slip between some harsh, controversial topics to light-hearted silliness to make for a refreshingly eclectic and brilliantly funny act.

Adam performed his first sell-out solo show at the 1996 Edinburgh Festival, quickly followed by the simply titled Adam Bloom Show in 1997. In July 1998 Adam appeared at the Montreal Comedy Festival, performing his routine as part of the Bitcom Show, and followed this with a return to Edinburgh. 1998 rates as one of Adam's most successful Edinburgh Festival to date, as not only was he one of the comics featured on Edinburgh or Bust for Ch4, but he also won the Polygram Punter Comedy Award' for his show!
No stranger to awards during this year. Adam also won the Time Out Award for Best Stand-up.

Join the sweetest, most soulful voice in British reggae as "The Queen of Lovers Rock" Carroll Thompson returns to Hideaway, celebrating the musical genre she has made her own and performing her iconic hits 'Hopelessly in Love', 'I'm So Sorry' and more.

Carroll Thompson burst on the scene in 1982, straight from the gospel traditions of her grandmother’s home, with the million-selling self-penned debut album 'Hopelessly In Love', which stayed in the UK reggae charts for an amazing and record-breaking two and a half years – spending much of that time securely at Number One.

The album become one of those rare, rare things - a true soundtrack for its generation and it resounded with a young audience with romance on its mind – in the bedroom and on the dancefloor - going on to score Number One single after Number One single with ‘I’m So Sorry’, ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Simply In Love’.

She won two GLR Reggae Awards in 1982, for Best Female Performer and Best Song (for 'Hopelessly In Love'). In 1983, she won further awards, again winning Best Female Performer at the GLR awards. She also recorded duets with Sugar Minott ('Make It With You') and Trevor Walters ('Love Won't Let Us Wait'), as well as continuing with regular solo reggae chart hits.

A Hideaway debut for New York's nu-soul man, Darien Dean. With his latest album, 'Departures' riding high in the UK Soul Charts and extensive radio play on Mi-Soul, Solar Radio and JazzFM the soul scene is beginning to feel the full force of this amazing talent.

The full extent of that talent can be measured by a noteworthy list of collaborators on this latest album, including the incomparable songstress Avery*Sunshine (on the instant classic ‘Someone is You’), as well as production helmed by multi-platinum hit-maker Herb Middleton (Mary J. Blige and Usher) and studio veteran Shawn Hibbler (Kindred the Family Soul, Darius Rucker).

Most notably, Dean backs up his talent by showcasing the great storytelling-soul traditions that have influenced his music.

Sunday Lunch - The Jive Aces

Sunday Lunch - The Jive Aces

Nov 5, 2:00pm - Nov 5, 4:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

The UK’s number one jump jive outfit return for another swinging Sunday Lunch bringing with them their high energy stage show! They will be joined by West End star of 'Beautiful - The Carole King Musical' - actress and singer Cassidy Janson!

"Opening up with The Jive Aces, the energy level quickly soars through the roof as the band starts stomping with some infectious, high-speed swing music that parallels the energy of 50s rock 'n' roll with all the silk and glamour of '40s swing. Truly modern, and making no claims otherwise, the band seems to be on a caffeine high as they shoot and dance around the notes with such clarity. I’ll give it an A." In Music We Trust - CD review

“Jive Aces rocked us, literally. If they were playing at any event they would raise the roof with their quirky banana suits and energetic moves.” Dean “Midas” Maynard - Huffington Post

The Jive Aces

Britain’s Got Talent stars, The Jive Aces, are the UK’s No.1 Jive & Swing band. Renowned for their high energy Jump Jive music and spectacular stage show, they famously put a grumpy Simon Cowell in a good mood.

The band features songs made famous by greats such as Louis Prima, Bobby Darin, Cab Calloway, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong and Sammy Davis Jr, as well as some superb originals. This extremely in-demand sextet has worked with John Travolta, Van Morrison, The Proclaimers, Chick Corea, Keely Smith and even Status Quo and have performed for HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip.

Having become the first ever band to reach the semi finals of Britain's Got Talent in 2012 following up with a performance for Her Majesty The Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and performances for both the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, The Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK's top Jive & Swing band.

Together for over a decade, this extremely popular six piece group have performed at thousands of festivals, theatres and events throughout the UK, Europe and USA, as well as Japan, Israel, South Africa, Morrocco and the Caribbean, 30 countries in all. The Jive Aces are renowned for their high energy Jump Jive music (the exciting sound where Swing meets Rock ‘n Roll) and spectacular stage show.

They combine a mixture of fresh arrangements of swing/Jive/R&B classics - songs made famous by such greats as Louis Prima, Cab Calloway, Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Big Joe Turner and Sammy Davis Jnr - along with a selection of superb swinging originals taken from their studio albums.

The Jive Aces have worked with many of the top names in the business, including John Travolta, Status Quo, Isaac Hayes, Van Morrison, Count Basie Orchestra, Keely Smith, Priscilla Presley, Buddy Greco, Kirstie Allie, Kenny Ball, Chuck Berry, Tony Christie and Lee Evans to name just a few.

With their high energy music, bright stage suits, wild stage show, irresistible humor and sheer professionalism, the Jive Aces will quickly get any audience on their feet - or dancing in their seat! Each and every show is guaranteed to go with a swing!

Pee Wee Ellis Presents Cold Sweat, 50 Years of Funk

Nov 10, 9:00pm - Nov 10, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Sax legend and former James Brown band leader heads this funky party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘Cold Sweat’, the song he co-wrote with the Godfather of Soul, that went on to change the face of music and be hailed as THE BIRTH OF FUNK!

Written and recorded in May1967 by Ellis and Brown, ‘Cold Sweat’ is widely regarded as a watershed moment in popular music, topping the Billboard R&B charts and reshaping contemporary music for decades to come.

Pivotal in the birth of funk, musically hugely influential and sampled by the hip-hop generation (Public Enemy, Roni Size, Ultramagnetic MCs and more), if one song deserves a 50th birthday party, then that song is ‘COLD SWEAT’!

Pee Wee’s remarkable story spans six decades, starting in the 50s when he took himself and his sax off to New York City to find his heroes Miles Davis, Theolonious Monk and the great Sonny Rollins. A promising career leading jazz bands in Florida took an unexpected turn in the 1965 when he joined James Brown’s Sensational Revue, playing alto sax.

Within six months he was bandleader/musical director and was co-writing with James Brown, including ‘Cold Sweat’ and many of JB’s hits for the next four years.

By 1970, Pee Wee was producing and directing for the likes of Brother Jack McDuff, Esther Phillips and George Benson and in 1979 he caught the ear of Van Morrison and began a spell as Van’s MD arranging the horns on albums such as ‘Into the Music’ and ‘Common One’

Special guest, “Sweet” Charles Sherell played bass on some of James Brown's most famous recordings of the late 1960s, including "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud", "Mother Popcorn", and "Give It Up or Turnit a Loose".

A talented vocalist in his own right, Sherell’s solo career includes his debut album, ‘Sweet Charles: For Sweet People’, featuring the hit ‘Yes It’s You’.

Scalding hot hard bop grooves spliced with free flowing fiery lyrics of the likes you’ve never heard before from the uniquely talented Soweto Kinch.

Soweto Kinch is multi award-winning saxophonist, MC and composer specialising in a trademark style of jazz, rap and spoken word unlike that of any other performer in the world. Revered among both musicians and rappers alike, Soweto has amassed an unprecedented array of accolades including two MOBO awards, two Urban Music Awards, BBC Rising Star Award, BBC Best Jazz Instrumentalist, BBC Best Jazz Band, Montreux Jazz Festival Award, Peter Whittingham Award for Jazz innovation, Winner of the White Foundation World Sax competition and a nomination for the much coveted Mercury Award.

Growing up with a playwright for a father and an actress for a mother, performance has always been in Soweto’s blood and has over the years become an ambassador of urban culture as well as a British jazz institution with achievements ranging from the curation of several large international festivals to the production and scoring of various highly acclaimed music-based theatrical works to starring in a reality show series which followed him and other music figureheads like Goldie and Ms Dynamite as they each mentored and coached 12 vulnerable youths ahead of their live performance before HM Prince Harry at Buckingham Palace.

“Hyper-talented saxman/rapper” Evening Standard

“Kicks pure jazz and authentic rap into a brave new world.” Guardian

“A distinct and commanding way of looking at jazz, at hip-hop, and at the whole performance situation” New York Times

“Contemporary and classic styles. It's difficult to think of anyone currently able to produce a more convincing and engaging mix than Soweto Kinch” BBC Music

The Oval Tavern, Croydon
131 Oval Road
Croydon,  CR0 6BR Map

Blue Rose Code, a.k.a. Ross Wilson, brings his new critically acclaimed album, The Water of Leith, to Croydon.

Centred around Wilson’s own homecoming to his native Scotland, the album explores the variety of journeys that life has to offer. As Wilson explains;

“It speaks to the journey home, my journey home, the man that I am today, so changed from the wee boy that ran away. I’ve found a peace that I left looking for, back on the same cobbled streets, looking at my life through a fresh pair of glasses. Controversially for a songwriter, it seems, I am contented, happier than I’ve ever been. Given up all hope of a better past, I’m rejoicing living in this beautiful series of moments.

The Water leads me back to the Shore and, from there, who knows? What I have learnt, however, is there is nothing wrong with right now.”

"Resolution 88 ... this is an exciting young band from Cambridge who take their influence from the immensely important, barrier-breaking mid 70's funk jazzer Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters - they've come out of nowhere at the last minute! There's absolutely no-one around at all like these guys at the moment!" Craig Charles (The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show)

"Resolution 88 have gone with the ... influence of mid-70's Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters and do it in the most heavyweight, sincere and unique way." Snowboy (Blues & Soul Magazine)

Resolution 88

Resolution 88 was started in 2012 as an original funk jazz project. Tom O’Grady, the keyboard player and MD, was inspired by Herbie Hancock & the Headhunters and more recent ground-breaking artists such as Kaidi Tatham. Resolution 88’s music is based around the sound of the Fender Rhodes piano, complex changes and heavily syncopated funk / broken beats.

With critical acclaim, flourishing sales and a fast growing fan base Resolution 88 have toured in the UK supporting the Blackbyrds (Donald Byrd’s famous protégés), Medeski, Martin & Wood, Nels Cline and Snarky Puppy.

Johnny Britt Presents Marvin Meets Miles

Johnny Britt Presents Marvin Meets Miles

Nov 17, 7:00pm - Nov 17, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

A soulful interpretation of an imagined collaboration between two musical giants, just what would have happened if Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis had ever teamed up? The answer lies in this album launch special as part of London Jazz Festival.

Louisville born Johnny Britt is a vocalist with range that lingers in that soft, buttery high tenor range regularly occupied by Marvin Gaye as well as being a world-renowned trumpeter greatly influenced by the less is more ethos of Miles Davis.

The fact that Britt sings and plays the trumpet explains why he would want to make the tribute album ‘Marvin Meets Miles’ in which his Harmon muted trumpet provides the second “voice” to nine tunes from the Marvin Gaye songbook.

Britt is a singer, songwriter, producer, trumpeter, arranger and composer. Eagle-eyed modern soul connoisseurs will recognise his name for the work he did with rare-groove outfit, Impromp2. Session-wise and live, he's worked with a cross genre selection of stars including Josh Groban, David Bowie, Jennifer Lopez, The Temptations, Maxwell, Peabo Bryson, Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick, Kashif, Norman Connors and The Winans and at the moment he's the music producer for the hit TV show 'America Sings'.

39-41 Katherine Street
Croydon,  CR0 1NX Map

1636. Lancaster Castle - The Witches' Tower. You are imprisoned, awaiting trial, crammed into a cell with a solitary woman who has been here for years. She tells you the story that lead to her being imprisoned, beginning at a Witchcraft Trial, twenty-four years previously.

But she was not the accused witch. In 1612, she was nine, and she was a witness for the prosecution against the Witches Of Pendle, including her own brother, sister, and mother. In this story, the infamous Jennet Device herself tells her version of the events which lead to the hanging of ten people - impossible, had it not been for Jennet's testimony - and her how fortunes fared since then.

Top Stand up Comedy with Steve Gribbin

Top Stand up Comedy with Steve Gribbin

Nov 17, 8:00pm - Nov 17, 10:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

A top night of stand up comedy with STEVE GRIBBIN, DAVE GREEN AND GRAINNE MAGUIRE (MC) plus funny guests!

Steve Gribbin
Steve Gribbin is a diminutive guitar-wielding satirist from Liverpool whose scabrous comedy songs and off the wall observations have made him one of the firm favourites of the comedy circuit.

Steve's original comedy songs combine razor sharp lyrics with tunes that put their foot in the door of your mind and refuse to leave. Firmly based in rock 'n' roll and refusing to pull no punches, these are not the 'oh so witty' ditties of penguin-suited plink plonk piano playing posh gobs. They are that rarity - comedy songs which are actually funny.

For nine years Steve was the smaller one in the dynamic comedy duo Skint Video, stalwart's of the Edinburgh Festival, appearing on countless television programmes such as Saturday Live, radio such as The Mary Whitehouse Experience, and their own show in 1992/3 Songlines (BBC Radio 1). Skint Video went their different ways in 1993, since when Steve has been storming across the UK and Ireland as a solo artiste.

"A highly refreshing and original comic with a gift for sharp observations and up-to-the-minute political asides... With more energy than a friendly Tasmanian devil, this affable and animated comedian tells jokes, plays the guitar and sings lyrics."- The Scotsman

Dave Green
Dave Green has been doing stand-up comedy since 2011. Since then his surreal one liners and deadpan delivery have fast proved popular with audiences and promoters alike. In 2013 he won the wild card vote in the BBC New Comedy Award securing him a place in the semi final which was broadcast on BBC Radio 2. In 2014 he was nominated by a panel of industry professionals to take part in the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year. He is also a finalist in the Leicester Square New Comedian 2012 and is the winner of the Comedy Knights Fresh Comedian 2014.

“Fantastically original gags” - Bruce Dessau, Beyond The Joke
“Could be a contender to follow in the footsteps of Milton Jones”. - Steve Bennett, Chortle
Highly watchable deadpan style – What’s on London
“Quietly and cleverly subversive” – James Punnett, The Bearcat

Grainne Maguire as MC
"Highly promising, has a big future ahead of her" - Time Out.
“An engaging and natural performer with has deep reserves of excitable energy...enjoyably bizarre" -Chortle
“Nice observations…can employ understatement with the dry mastery of a Father Ted script" - Chortle
“Popular with audiences and comedians alike…excellent set... inspired and extremely funny” - Inside Comedy

Nov 19, 12:00pm - Nov 19, 4:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Diz "Honey Bear" Watson is one of the British greats when it comes to barrelhouse piano and New Orleans boogie. Credited by Ben Waters as an early influence and heralded by some of the finest New Orleans’ musicians of all time, Diz continues to delight audiences across the world as he launched his latest album, ‘Diz-Connected’ last Autumn and marks the 35th anniversary of the acclaimed ‘Bluecoat Man’ album released on ACE records in 1981.

UNDER 16s admitted FREE - Please let us know how many children will be attending in the Comments Box section of the booking form.

"Diz is great, you can't fool him. He really can play that piano" Dr John

"Diz is one of the rockiest piano players in the world." Lee Allen

Diz and the Doormen, capture the spirit of the Crescent City, influenced by Doctor John, Professor Longhair, Huey "Piano" Smith, Amos Milburn and James Booker as well as the more expansive palettes of Tom Waits and Ibrahim Abdullah.

Diz was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in l948, and at the age of 12 the family moved back to Yorkshire, England. Diz formed a friendship with the legendary "Champion" Jack Dupree, who had settled in Halifax a town not far away - "Jack really inspired me to the more prehistoric rolling sound of the piano and also the way to phrase the blues poetry".

After a spell in the Merchant Navy, Diz found himself playing in a variety of bands before forming his own combo - the "Commissionaires" (on account of the uniforms they wore "donated" by a head porter at a London hotel), soon to become ‘Diz and the Doormen’.

This line-up soon had a cult following packing rock-a-billies, punks, purists and ska-heads into their gigs across town. The release of ‘Bluecoat Man’ (featuring American giants Lee Allen and Walter Kimble) built on their fanbase. And with critical acclaim for the album, the band toured with Chas 'n' Dave, opened for Madness and backed up Dr John on the Nighttripper Tour (culminating in the Glastonbury Festival).

Further releases on ACE records followed with ‘Rhumbalero’ in 1984 and ‘Tonky Honk’ featuring special guest Big Jay McNeely in 2009.

Loving Vincent (12A)

Loving Vincent (12A)

Nov 22, 7:45pm - Nov 22, 10:00pm

SNCC, 10 South Norwood Hill, London, SE25 6AB Map

Join us for the world's first oil painted feature film!

Loving Vincent is a beautiful animation that explores the life and controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh, told by his paintings and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death.

Painted with over 65,000 frames on over 1,000 canvases, the film was shot with actors, and literally painted over frame by frame in the artist's style. It took 4 years to develop the technique, and 2 years to complete the film with a team of over 100 painters.

PLUS SHORT:

An Ode to Joy (2014) by Martin Pickles

An introduction to the work of Joy Batchelor, animator, director, and producer. Joy was one half of the Halas & Batchelor Cartoons Studio which made the UK's first animated feature film, Animal Farm, in 1954. Although a crucial figure in British animation, today she is almost unknown, something this film seeks to redress. Cert U.

Two great bands in one night and just a fiver to get in? That's the deal of the century made all the better when you learn that the bands are Sugarman Sam & The Voodoo Men and The Voodoo Sheiks!

WHO ARE THE VOODOO SHEIKS?
Vibrant, is an excellent word to describe the cranked up and cranked out hugely entertaining Voodoo Sheiks. The Sheiks are right in the groove and carve out some serious classic sounding R&B. There is no time to draw breath with these guys as they deliver pile driving guitar barrelling along on clipped lead runs, searing harmonica, rasped vocals and dense beats.

The party never starts until The Voodoo Sheiks smash down your front door and deliver the goods in person... Boom!

AND SUGARMAN SAM?
From the age of 13 Sam has had an un-deniable passion for all things guitar; What started as a forbidden listen to AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell’ album on his fathers tape player has developed into something of great musical diversity, adaptation and all round dedication to perfection.

2007 saw The Sugarman gain his first break as guitarist for local blues bruisers ‘Ripslide’. The band garnered interest and were soon frequenting the local club circuit resulting in the prestigious ‘BASINGSTOKE LIVE’ festival, with Sam becoming a go-to session man for local acts.

Having built up a reputation as a reliable and competent player, he lent his guitar skills to sessions that showcased his incredible array of styles, including; Jazz, Country, Blues, Heavy Metal and Progressive but to name a few

It was always going to come back to what was at heart; the blues. Sugarman Sam is now back firmly playing classic british blues/rock with his power quartet, The Voodoo Men; live music is where the band shines best and playing live is just where they'll be!

Even without knowing it, there’s a fair chance if you’ll have heard Janette’s special musical touch time and again - on many albums from Ian Shaw to Robert Wyatt, live in concert with Oasis plus her contributions to movie and TV soundtracks.

A talented composer and arranger, she was recently commissioned to write the score for feature film, The Calling, contributed four arrangements to Ian Shaw’s album, Drawn to all Things, and produced and arranged Lea DeLaria’s current Warner Brothers release, The Live Smoke Sessions, which made the Grammy ballot.

As a Jazz musician, she has been a seminal figure on the British Jazz scene for the last fifteen years, sharing the stage with Mornington Lockett, Julian Siegel and many more.

Hideaway presents BOND

Hideaway presents BOND

Dec 9, 9:00pm - Dec 9, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

It’s just not Christmas without a fix of BOND – expect some classy new jazz arrangements as iconic Bond themes are given a new twist by a stellar line up led by Hideaway Musical Director Janette Mason with the sublime vocals of David McAlmont and Natasha Watts.

Enjoy fresh arrangements of stylish masterpieces such as Diamonds are Forever, Goldfinger and Live and Let Die, shaken (but not stirred) into a cocktail of glitz, glamour and fabulous music. Martini cocktails served from our bar, tuxedos and cocktail dresses optional but preferred.

Line up: David McAlmont (Vocals) Natasha Watts (Vocals), Janette Mason (MD / Keys), Tom Mason (Bass), Davide Giovannini (Drums), Emlyn Francis (Guitar), Shanti Jayasinha (Trumpet), Richard Beesley (Saxophone), Martin Gladdish (Trombone)

David McAlmont

Possibly one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced, having collaborated with everyone from Bond composer David Arnold to Michael Nyman, Paul Weller and most famously with Bernard Butler producing the classic hit single Yes. McAlmont's music is pure emotion, drawing unique, soulful portraits from his own life and philosophies, all beautifully framed by the finest soul.

Natasha Watts

Award-winning soul star and Cool Million collaborator, Natasha Watts returns to the stage from her solo show here in September. With three number one singles and a Soul Survivors award under her belt, Natasha has worked alongside Rob Hardt from Cool Million and Richard Earnshaw to complete her new album.

"Natasha’s voice, soft and reassuring yet capable of the bellowing power of Shirley Bassey” Mi Soul

2012 saw Natasha burst on to the soul scene with the Cool Million single, 'Show Me Off’, this was to be the start of Natasha & Rob Hardt working together on numerous projects, including her eponymous debut which made top ten lists across the country and received airplay on stations such as BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio Manchester, Solent and Jazz FM - where it was named album of the week.

Off the back of that wonderful album Natasha was chosen to support Soul Queen, Gladys Knight, on her UK Tour, earning rave reviews along the way.

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Dec 22, 7:00pm - Dec 22, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Bassist and bandleader Gary Crosby brings Jazz Jamaica back to Hideaway for a festive Christmas special! Mixing up jazz and ska classics, bringing in some reggae vibes and performing with a swing and zeal that has made them festival favourites around the world, Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as 'one of the UK's leading good-time bands' (The Independent).

“Jazz Jamaica should be permanent ambassadors to the United Nations of Good Times.” Cheltenham International Jazz Festival

In 1991, inspired by the rhythms of traditional Jamaican music and the largely improvisational nature of jazz, original Jazz Warrior and veteran jazz double bassist, Gary Crosby, turned a musical concept into a joyful reality. Crosby's concept was to create a quintessential fusion of mento, ska, reggae and jazz, playing classic and modern jazz standards alongside Jamaican folksongs. The result was Jazz Jamaica.

Since its realisation, Crosby has developed the Jazz Jamaica concept by introducing a stream of talented young jazz musicians, so increasing the size of the pool of Jazz Jamaicans, and enabling him to push the boundaries of the music played. Collectively, Crosby and his musicians represent the finest exponents of this unique musical fusion known as skazz, a fusion loved and appreciated by everyone, of all ages and colours around the globe. In 2002, Jazz Jamaica All Stars were winners of the BBC Radio Jazz Award for Best Band.

Crosby’s leadership and drive continue to ensure the evolution of Jazz Jamaica – a process that is encapsulated by the recent headline grabbing collaborative project “Catch A Fire” that saw the band join a 240 voice choir, the Urban Soul Orchestra and Brinsley Forde (Aswad) in a celebration of the music of Bob Marley at the Royal Festival Hall this Summer.

NYE Soul and Groove Party feat. Ray Simpson

NYE Soul and Groove Party feat. Ray Simpson

Dec 31, 7:00pm - Jan 1, 1:00am

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

It’s New Year’s Eve and time for a big SOUL and GROOVE party with our special guest, UK soul man extraordinaire Ray Simpson (Cymande, Soul II Soul, Incognito and more) serving up two sets of stone cold soul classics and dance floor fillers as we say hello to 2018 in style here in SW16!

Ticket price includes a glass of bubbly on arrival and a 4 course meal.

Ray Simpson is a British based recording artist who was inspired by the soulful sounds of Motown, Stax, Atlantic Records, Philadelphia International and others, which led him to follow his dreams and achieve a career as a musician.

Ray went on to develop a varied solo career as a vocalist, producer and songwriter, writing for himself and other popular artists such as Maxi Priest, Sugar Minott and Al Campbell to name a few.

In 1984 Ray signed recording and publishing deals with Island Records and Blue Mountain Music, and started to actively explore soul and funk music. He collaborated with Jean Paul Maunick (Bluey), of Incognito, to record vocals on a project produced by Maunick and also toured with Incognito.

In 1989 Ray was signed by Circa Records and recorded his self-titled debut album ‘Ray Simpson’, produced by celebrated American producer Michael J Powell (whose production credits include work with Anita Baker, Randy Crawford among others).

Over the years Ray has worked with Will Downing, Jocelyn Brown, Loose Ends, Maysa Leak and Caron Wheeler and was a featured soloist with Soul II Soul on their album ‘Time For Change’ on which he penned the single ‘Pleasuredome‘.

Ray’s connection with Cymande dates back to the origin of the band in the 70’s, when as a young schoolboy he would watch the band practice in their Brixton basement and thereafter follow their progress with great interest through the connection between his family and the family of Sam Kelly and Derrick Gibbs. That connection was made complete as Ray joined the newly reformed Cymande, touring the US with the band in 2016.

Joining Ray on stage will be Sam Kelly (drums, Cymande), Ray Carless (sax, Cymande, Incognito), Richard Sadler (bass, Kinks, Paul Weller Neil Cowley Trio), Paul Jobson (keys, Chaka Khan, Omar, Joss Stone), Michael ‘Lally’ Carey (guitar) and Kevin Davy (trumpet, Cymande, Finlay Quaye).
