SLOB at Theatre Utopia 1st-2nd Sept

Sep 1, 7:30pm - Sep 2, 8:30pm

Theatre Utopia
1 Matthews Yard, off Surrey Street Market
Croydon,  CR0 1FF Map

Theatre85 are on the wagon performing in CROYDON!

“Some call him ‘SLOB’,
Some call him dirt,
Some call him drunk - and all of these hurt…
So: Raise up your glasses, out on the town…
Here’s to - The units of drink in a clown”.

SLOB.
HE WEARS A PAINTED SMILE…
WITH EMPTY POCKETS. LIQUID NARCOTICS & BOOZY TUNES!

He thinks he is invincible but to the world he is invisible. One man vs. the world, completely alone…until YOU the audience arrives!

Performed by actor and clown artist Tommy Murray, this new piece is accompanied by live music from composer and actor Jonathon Deering.
The show promises to be a heart-warming, hard-hitting and heavy drinking journey into the 'spirit' of addiction.
This comic and tragic creation follows a sobering snapshot into the life of a father, a clown. He is lager than life.

Drink up, and take a look into the world of SLOB. Bottoms up!

The performances of SLOB in Croydon are part of The ‘Lager Than Life’ Tour 2017 that has seen the show performed in Paris and venues in the UK.

This performance is recommended for 16+ due to some of the themes - such as alcoholism and addiction.

There will be a collection after the show for Alcohol Concern:

Hil St Soul

Hilary Mwelwa aka Hil St Soul was born in Lusaka, Zambia and relocated to London with her family at age five. SCREENING + PERFORMANCE LECTURES // Pin It Down

Sep 2, 4:00pm - Sep 2, 6:00pm

Turf Projects
Croydon,  CR0 1TF Map

A series of screenings and performance lectures by ‘You’re Surrounded by Me’ exhibiting artists, Chris Alton, Naomi Fitzsimmons, Katherine Midgley and Jasleen Kaur, followed by a Q&A.

Alton will give a performance lecture on the symbolic genealogy of the trident, from antiquity to present. Stopping off at ancient gods, nuclear arsenals and Central American fiduciaries, the presentation will trace the many manifestations of the trident as a symbol of colonial intent.

Fitzsimmons’ short film documents the artist’s attempt to find and connect with a stock image model, referred to online as ‘Ariane’. Whilst overexposed and hyper-visible ‘Ariane’ is simultaneously anonymous and ultimately invisible. Casting herself in the role of protagonist ‘Naomi’ performs and adopts various strategies in her quest for intimacy with ‘Ariane’. In doing so, she explores the status of images in contemporary visual culture and the relationship they have with representation, power, exploitation and identity.

Having just returned from the Sydney headquarters of property developer Lendlease, Midgley will present a new performance lecture regarding the long-term antagonist of her practice. In Midgley’s whimsical performances and films, she frequently adopts a naïve, inquisitive persona to explore and question the activities of Lendlease, a company who were recently awarded a £40 million construction contract in Croydon’s Ruskin Square.

YOOROP presents a vision of Europe, through the lens of popular Indian cinema. Kaur’s montage of appropriated footage raises questions regarding the representation of cultures, by imagining a future in which the history of the West is written by the East.

Dazed & Confused (15)

Sep 6, 8:00pm - Sep 6, 10:00pm

South Norwood Conservative Club
10 South Norwood Hill
South Norwood,  SE25 6AB Map

Head back to school in style this September, with a screening of Richard Linklater’s Dazed & Confused (1993).

It's May 28, 1976, the last day of the academic year at Lee High School. Many of the kids are skipping classes, smoking weed and thinking about the big keg party for the senior students. The upperclassmen are hazing the incoming freshmen, and everyone is trying to get stoned, drunk, or laid, even the football players that signed a pledge not to...

Featuring a colourful mix of character and a thunderous rock soundtrack, Dazed & Confused is a coming-of-age story that perfectly captures that unforgettable 70s high school spirit. What better way to commiserate the start of term than with this iconic cult classic on the big screen?!

PLUS SHORT:

Storytime returns after the summer break with a fabulously colourful Warhol themed session, linking with Warhol Croydon 2017.

Handy Andys at Storytime
Make your own pop art print at Storytime! We'll be looking at the way Andy Warhol used repetition and bright colour then making our own prints using hands, foam, potatoes - whatever's about...
Our featured story book today will be 'Uncle Andy's' by James Warhola (Andy Warhol's nephew). Told from a child's perspective he talks about visiting his uncle's studio and all the interesting people and projects there, also how inspiring it was to be surrounded by the work in Uncle Andy's studio and to be able to see the process involed in creating the art.

About Storytime:

Storytime is facilitated by Jenny Lockyer and is a friendly and relaxed session for children aged 3-10years.
It runs every Saturday (apart from during summer holidays) at The Oval Tavern in East Croydon.

Children can enjoy stories, puppets, arts and crafts. We have a different theme each week and lots of picture and board books. Please bring a story of your own to share if you like!

Free, donations welcome.

Just £5 gets you in and advance tickets can be booked by emailing CoulsdonComrades@aol.com

The launch party for Dave's new album 'Lies and Gin' and featuring a very special guest in the person of Nigel Feist.

Dave Ferra is no stranger to The Tuesday Night Music Club and there's good reason for that. Each time he plays he leaves a room full of smiling people! His music does that to you and so does his dry wit! This was the feedback (or part of it!) last time he played at The Club:

"Great evening, loved their performance. They had me smiling or laughing out loud throughout."

"Proper Blues"

"Just gets better ...and what a great sense of humour, immaculate timing...he should be on the stage!!!"

"Dave Ferra all stars - What a saxamaphone player. Treat treat treat"

"Not to mention that had to be the best version of 'My old friend the Blues' I've ever heard! Tremendous way to close a Blues gig!"

"Gotta love Dave Ferra and his Allstars. Indeed a great set of quality blues from some really talented guys."

This promises to be another magical night.

A Moving Image (15) + panel discussion

A Moving Image (15) + panel discussion

Sep 13, 8:00pm - Sep 13, 10:00pm

South Norwood Conservative Club
10 South Norwood Hill
South Norwood,  SE25 6AB Map

Let’s talk about gentrification.

Shola Amoo’s A Moving Image is an award winning multimedia feature film about gentrification in Brixton, incorporating fiction, documentary and performance art.

Nina is a young stifled artist returning to her community after a long absence, only to find that she is now being painted as a symbol of gentrification. As she struggles with her own complicity, she takes on the challenge of creating a piece of art that can bring her community together. On her journey she speaks to real people affected by gentrification in Brixton, blurring the line between reality and fiction.

So, is it possible to regenerate an area without stripping away its soul and displacing its natives? The director, who is a born and bred south Londoner, explores this question as he gets under the skin of gentrification, confronting those all important issues of race, community and class that are so recognisable on our own streets in South Norwood.

Followed by a panel discussion with:

- Shola Amoo, director of A Moving Image;

- Lisa McKenzie, British sociologist and research fellow at the London School of Economics, whose research interests focus on class inequality, social justice, and British working class culture. Lisa is author of Getting By: Estates, Class and Culture in Austerity Britain;

- Betiel Mehari, activist who has lived and worked in Brixton for 11 years. Betiel began campaigning as a direct result of the regeneration of Brixton and started a campaign called Guinness Occupation and Guinness Trust AST, occupying a flat to stop the evictions of many families in Somerleyton Road in 2015;

- Cllr Paul Scott, councillor for Woodside Ward, incorporating the southern half of South Norwood, on Croydon Council since 2002. He is actively involved in the local area, being the Chair of People for Portland Road. He recently led a local working group on the development of a community economic development plan for South Norwood entitled 'Taking Control of Our Own Destiny', as part of his ongoing work to regenerate the local area for the local community. He is also an architect, specialising in social infrastructure projects. He chairs Croydon's Planning Committee and is committed to ensuring that Croydon plays its part in tackling the housing crisis that is currently blighting so many people's lives.

The Spread Eagle Pub & Theatre
39-41 Katherine Street
Croydon,  CR0 1NX Map

Constance Lloyd is rarely remembered in literary history. A feminist, a writer and a mother, she is rather remembered as the wife of one of the most infamous Victorians – Oscar Wilde.

From her childhood days suffering at the hands of her abusive mother to blossoming into a young woman of society, Constance’s story is intriguing and varied. She had her own income, she brought up her two small children almost single-handedly and was one of the most well-known faces and names among the celebrities of London in the late 1800s.

Mrs. Oscar Wilde is a presentation of her life, told using excerpts of accounts in her own hand in letters to those she knew and loved, revealing a wit that rivaled Oscar’s himself, a sense of humour dry and winning and a sense of self that will have every audience member rooting for the tragic heroine from beginning to end.

This one woman show features award-winning actress and writer Lexi Wolfe, whom also received the nomination for Best Female Actor at the Buxton Fringe 2016 for Mrs. Oscar Wilde. Mrs. Oscar Wilde is touring and appearing in Fringe Festivals in 2017.

FREE PUBLIC LECTURE ON ANDY WARHOL

Jean Wainwright, Director and Professor of Fine Art and Photography at the University for Creative Arts (UCA) and curator of a number of Warhol exhibitions, invites you to join her as she explores the ‘Exploding Plastic Inevitable’, the series of multimedia events organised by Warhol from 1966 to 1967 which featured musical performances from The Velvet Underground and screenings of Warhol films amongst other activities. Lectures last for one hour and 45 minutes.

Jean Wainwright first met Andy Warhol’s family, his brothers, nieces and nephews in 1996 and was able to intensely interview them and gain insights over the last twenty years into many personal aspects of Warhol’s life.

Her PhD was on Andy Warhol’s audio tapes where she was given unique access to a Warhol archive that has been subsequently embargoed. As a writer and academic she has published extensively in the contemporary arts field, as well as appearing on television and radio programmes (including the Today Programme, Channel Four, BBC and The Open University and TAN TV).

As an art critic her practice most prominently features interviews with international artists, photographers, filmmakers and curators. Her entire unedited Audio Arts archive dating from 1996 was acquired in 2006 by the Tate Gallery. Wainwright is based in London. She has curated exhibitions on Warhol and is a Professor at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) where she is Director of the Fine Art & Photography Research Centre.

Side-splitting comedy makes its way back to SE25 with the critically acclaimed feature Mindhorn.

Barratt (Richard Thorncroft), is a down-and-out actor who starred in the 1980s television show Mindhorn, about a detective with the power to see truth through a cybernetic eye. 25 years later, on the Isle of Man where Mindhorn was filmed, police are on the hunt for Paul Melly, an escaped lunatic wanted for murder. Melly refuses to speak to anyone but his beloved idol - Detective Mindhorn himself.

Fans of The Mighty Boosh, Alan Partridge and other wacky British comedy will not be left disappointed with this homage to bad 70s and 80s television. Features guest appearances from a host of Britain's best talent including Simon Callow, Kenneth Branagh, Steve Coogan and Russell Tovey.

Turf Projects
Croydon,  CR01TF Map

OPENING NIGHT FRI 22 SEPT 5-9pm // Free Refreshments Plus BYOB Welcome

Graduating from BA Fine Art in July 2017, Karnika Satchi was selected for 2017’s Turf Projects x Croydon School of Art graduate residency.

In culminating residency exhibition ‘Indiscernible’, Satchi attempts to connect the viewer with realistic expressions of health and wellness. Satchi’s work gives an opportunity for us to connect with ideas about our bodies and living healthy lives.

There is the concept of binary opposition that occurs throughout: the materials used are familiar, simultaneously suggesting parts of the body that are usually hidden and unfamiliar. This use of familiar materials introduces a quality of humanity, the sense that the work has been part of a human process.

Using everyday items like knitting, clay, cotton, fabric, latex, Satchi suggests a binary opposition of strength and weakness within the human body, making internal parts of the body external, so that viewers can have a deeper appreciation of the human anatomy; composed of amazing organs and awe inspiring physiological functions.

Sep 22, 8:00pm - Sep 22, 10:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Headliners TONY LAW, DAVID WARD and RYAN McDONNELL (MC) plus funny guests!

FREE ENTRY & WELCOME COCKTAIL IF IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY!

TONY LAW

In some moments of strangeness he channels the spirit of the late Chris Lubey – a circuit comic whose act was impersonating RAF fly-pasts – then he’s on about a lizard-moose who can see the future . A large chunk is delivered in an accent from America’s Deep South for no particular reason. Some of the tales might be considered metaphor – his past life as a trampolining champ mirroring some ups and downs in his mental wellbeing – most might be considered just plain surreal, for you can’t spell Tony Law without WTF.

This isn’t, perhaps, vintage Law, but he’s never less than intriguing: funny peculiar as much as it is funny ha-ha, though if you buy tickets for a show with a title as cumbersome as A Law Undo His-elf What Welcome, that’s only to be expected. And if you’re not on Law’s wavelength you’ll get baffled, and quite possibly angry, at how such nonsense could possibly pass as comedy.

DAVID WARD

“Fluid, quick thinking and with an original take on life, Dave's material is both varied and universally popular.” Red Card Comedy Club website

"Enjoyable and entertaining" Time Out

"always enjoyable… builds an atmosphere where laughter flourishes…really funny" Chortle website

Ryan McDonnell

Ryan's comedy career began in 2007 in London. After just a year of service he was awarded a place in the Magners Comedy Awards final of 2008, before going on to finish as runner-up in the prestigious Amused Moose new act competition in Edinburgh the following year.

2010 saw him turn professional as well as make his debut at the Edinburgh Festival's esteemed Pleasance Courtyard, as part of Bound & Gagged's 'AAA' show, which was a complete sell-out for the entire run.

Jo Harman

Jo Harman

Sep 22, 9:00pm - Sep 22, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Her blend of soul, blues, gospel and timeless pop has become the trademark of singer/songwriter Jo Harman as she rightly earns the reputation of possessing one of the finest soul and blues voices in the country securing continued success, critical acclaim, touring and national radio play coming.

“Sometimes you hear a voice that leaves you speechless “ Huey Morgan, BBC Radio 2

“On course to be the finest UK female blues soul voice” Daily Mirror

“Stunning. Harman’s music mainlines the human soul“ Classic Rock Blues Magazine

“I believe this lady to be one of the finest singers this country has to offer! She really is tremendous! I hope our paths cross again” Rag N Bone Man

Raised in Southwest England, Harman found success on her own terms with her debut, Dirt On My Tongue. The album was released independently in 2013 and supported by a touring schedule that found Harman sharing the stage with icons like Patti Smith, Joan Baez and Sinead O’Connor.

Released worldwide on February 3, 2017, People We Become marks the biggest leap of Harman’s career. To make it, she headed overseas to Nashville, Tennessee, where she found a trusted collaborator in producer Fred Mollin. While a winter storm raged outside, Harman and Mollin holed up inside the city’s famed Sound Emporium Studio for three weeks, focusing on a warm sound — full of upright piano, Rhodes, unaffected bursts of electric guitar, and the soulful sweep of Harman’s voice — that contrasted with the town’s snowy weather. Shortly after the album’s release, she’ll return to Nashville again, this time as part of her first American tour.

On an album that features performances by award-winning players like Tom Bukovac, Greg Morrow, and Gordon Mote — as well as a guest appearance by the Doobie Brothers’ frontman, Michael McDonald, who lends his harmony vocals to the Seventies-worthy soul of “When We Were Young” — the most striking instrument is Harman’s voice. It’s an instrument that’s been sharpened by her years on the road, and it’s never sounded better.

PJ Morton

PJ Morton

Sep 24, 8:30pm - Sep 24, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Soulgigs and Biggs presents a London exclusive as Maroon 5 keys man PJ Morton launches his new solo album 'Gumbo' at Hideaway.

By the time GRAMMY® Award- and Dove® Award-winning singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist and Maroon 5 keyboardist PJ Morton moved back to his native New Orleans in 2016, he had built an unbelievable career.

In addition to boasting collaborations with Adam Levine, Lil Wayne, and Busta Rhymes, his critically acclaimed 2013 offering, New Orleans, earned a 2014 GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of “Best R&B Song” for “Only One” [feat. Stevie Wonder]. Pitchfork called it, “a smooth and soulful pop/R&B hybrid,” and the record dramatically expanded his influence. In addition to figuring prominently on Maroon 5’s multiplatinum Overexposed and V, Morton has written and produced for everybody from BJ The Chicago Kid, Jermaine Dupri, and Jazmine Sullivan to Monica and India.Arie, winning a GRAMMY® for collaborating with the latter in 2008. His music has also popped up in films such as Couples Retreat and more.

Among many other accolades, he has received Dove® and Stellar® Awards, published his literary debut Why Can’t I Sing About Love? in 2009, and became music director for Solange following the release of her critically acclaimed opus A Seat At The Table.

Relocating from Los Angeles, he returned home with a pronounced fire and hunger. It simmers throughout his 2017 solo album and first offering for his own Morton Records, Gumbo from the funkified grooves of “Claustrophobic” [feat. Pell] to the unifying and undeniable message of “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” [feat. BJ The Chicago Kid & The Hamiltones]. This is a new beginning for PJ and real soul.

Sep 27, 8:00pm - Sep 27, 10:00pm

South Norwood Conservative Club
10 South Norwood Hill
South Norwood,  SE25 6AB Map

Ever wondered what the film industry was like during Britain's finest hour? Then join us for this uplifting and inspirational look into the world of war time propaganda filmmaking.

Gemma Arterton stars as Catrin, a talented young copy-writer enticed to London from Wales by her self-absorbed artist husband (Jack Huston). She gets a job as a script editor with the Ministry of Information, where she’s hired to write convincing women’s dialogue (or “slop”) for morale-boosting propaganda films. Quickly noticed for her natural ability, she's drafted by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) to work alongside a colourful crew to produce the morale-building cinematic stories the nation so desperately needs.

Based on the novel Their Finest Hour and a Half by Lissa Evans, debut screenwriter Gaby Chiappe’s adaptation blends shrewd wit with a lot of heart, displaying a keen sense of the mood of the time, resulting in a charming, nostalgic and spirited wartime drama.

There are still three tower blocks standing in Carpenters estate. House for many, but home for few families; collateral damage of the London Olympics and an ambitious redevelopment by Newham Council.

Sometimes, when the evening sun hits the facade, you can see the interiors, the traces left behind by the neighbours that used to be there. Half-opening my eyes I look through my eyelashes, imagining that I turn into a kind of sneaky gas, able to get through the crannies and open windows of the abandoned flats. I imagine myself admiring the ecosystem that has developed there, with magical creatures cohabiting harmoniously in the spaces. When I have my eyes wide open, though, I see leaks, invasive plants, pigeons, insects and rats are actually the ones who share the blocks with the few neighbours that are still living in those neglected buildings.

Those neighbours must be like water, adapting to any container. They are judged and put into boxes, flattened, actions which they are forced to revolt against to show themselves as multidimensional and meaningful. They find themselves riding through the peaks and troughs, the emotional rollercoaster of the housing market.

I feel shattered, trying to block the building view with my hands, which I see turning into fine dust, blending with those metallic nanoparticles already present in the polluted air. While these environmental nanoparticles are solid, they are so tiny, so invasive; able to disperse in water, the air, or linger on solid matter, such us our body. Here they get absorbed through our skin or respiratory system to sediment in our internal tissues, becoming part of us, increasing aggressive behaviour, premature dementia and being a known cause of cancer.

It is called regeneration. When a building is knocked down, it leaves a gap in the landscape, similar to the one a missing tooth leaves in the denture, where the air circulates freely; missing the mass, the warmth of that edifice it used to cast before.

Turf Projects has commissioned this solo exhibition ‘Peaks & Troughs’ by Saelia Aparicio. The exhibition – an installation, combines mural drawings, modified found objects, mouth blown glass, probiotics and pollution. Sculpture functions as either lenses and filters, distorting, multiplying, and letting the light through. Although it suggests some narrative, we can only see some parts of its structure, showing first an introduction, the surface, or epidermal layer of the city as a body, to then penetrate into its entrails, a world of darkness and artificial light.

Peaks & Troughs has been generously funded by the Arts Council England and Croydon Council.

// ABOUT SAELIA APARICIO
Saelia Aparicio lives on a secret island in London. She graduated in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art in 2015. She has had institutional solo shows at La Conservera (2012, Murcia, Spain) the Patio Herreriano Museum (2013, Valladolid, Spain) and Da2 2002 Domus Artium (2015, Salamanca, Spain)

Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 jukebox musical romantic comedy film directed, produced, and co-written by Baz Luhrmann. Christian, a young aspiring Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris' now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet finds himself immersed into a passionate but tragic love affair with Satine, the city's most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich, mingle with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

CROWD presents Sounds of Warhol feat. The Kevin Rowland DJ Show

CROWD presents Sounds of Warhol feat. The Kevin Rowland DJ Show

Sep 29, 4:30pm - Sep 29, 9:30pm

St Georges Walk Croydon
London,   Map

FREE ENTRY. CROWD is back with another pop-up event in the heart of Croydon town.

And this one is all about the POP as CROWD joins the month long Warhol Croydon celebration of the king of pop art with a night of great sounds inspired by the era and the man himself. (Find out more about Warhol Croydon at warholcroydon.co.uk/)

Packing in Sixties soul, underground sounds and hedonistic Studio 54 vibes, with a headline DJ show from KEVIN ROWLAND (Dexys) served up alongside some of the finest pop up bars and street food traders we can muster, this is set to be one big signing off party for this unique cross-town arts extravaganza.

Leader of the iconic Dexys Midnight Runners, now Dexys after their successful comeback in 2012 after 25 years hiatus, Kevin Rowland’s musical genius has made him a highly respected and in-demand DJ.

Playing for adoring audiences at clubs and festivals across the UK throughout the years, Kevin has also compiled the “Made to Measure" compilation for Motown.

For the past decade, Dexy’s legendary frontman and artistic visionary has developed a different class of DJ set, expressing a deep love of classic anthems and an uncanny ability for uncovering neglected pop gold.

Kevin crafts more than just a straight DJ set, this is a DJ show – taking to the mic and dropping his own unique vocal chops and no-holds-barred emotional attitude that makes Dexy’s live performances so special to create an atmosphere of an intimate gig than a traditional club night.

Rowland is a true artist who keeps his revolution in total forward motion; what was, was – what is, is – and what will be will be, when he decides it to be.

And all of this underpinned by our good friends and masters of mixology mayhem STREET COCKTAILS and their party-righteous sound system crew.

Maxi Jazz and The E-Type Boys

Maxi Jazz and The E-Type Boys

Sep 29, 9:00pm - Sep 29, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

What do you do if you’ve spent the thick end of twenty years touring the globe, forging a reputation with Faithless electronic wizards and festival favourites? If you’re Maxi Jazz, it’s simple; form a guitar band.

Growing up a radio head in 70´s London, Maxis´ influences range from Todd Rundgren to Sly Stone, James Brown to the Steve Miller Band as well as the ´Golden Age´ of Reggae.

When in 2011 Maxi, already had 6 or 7 songs, written for fun on guitar, but no plans to do anything with them. After writing more, and evolving the songs, Maxi spontaneously decided to call some old mates and form a band to play his melodic style of funky blues guitar music.

The E-Type Boys could as well have been named the Mothers of Re-Invention! All of Maxi’s influences weave through the music, dubby baselines adding Jamaican melody to Bluesy guitar lines and smooth, heartfelt vocals.

Maxi has received many plaudits for his highly poetic lyrical style and this is, again, plainly evident in his latest body of work.

A sense is conveyed of his great love for the human spirit, along with a playful sense of humour.

The E-Type Boys live are a powerful band, a wild funk outfit, tight and direct.

Maxi Jazz is back to his roots.

The Original Aces and Ciyo Brown present Sounds & Pressure Part2

The Original Aces and Ciyo Brown present Sounds & Pressure Part2

Sep 30, 9:00pm - Sep 30, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

The Original Aces, one of the most iconic vocal groups in Jamaican music history, have reformed and join forces with guitar man Ciyo Brown to bring us SOUNDS AND PRESSURE PART 2 - a celebration of ROCKSTEADY, the rhythmic bridge that spanned ska and reggae and the follow up to one of the biggest party nights we have seen at Hideaway.

Reformed and sounding studio fresh, the vocal harmonies of the Original Aces, featuring Barry Howard and Carl St Clair plus new member Black Steel, first came to the world's attention through their groundbreaking work with Desmond Dekker recording hit after hit followed, including ‘Israelites’, '007', and ‘'It Mek'.

Desmond Dekker & The Aces were the first Jamaican reggae artist to achieved a Number 1 chart hit record in the UK and Europe with 'Israelites'. Hit after hit followed, including '007', 'It Mek', 'Unity' and many more, securing The Aces a unique place in Jamaican and world musical history.

"Desmond Dekker & The Aces, singing lyrics in a Jamaican patois, helped make his 1969 song “Israelites" an ode to the troubles of the poor, sold millions of copies, became the first purely Jamaican song to top the charts in the United States, and opened the ears of the world to the music of the island,” wrote Los Angeles Times journalist Jocelyn Y. Stewart.
